  • How much better is Vienna Special Edition package than the Opus libraries?

Hi, I am considering purchasing the VIenna Special Edition package as an upgrade from the Opus 1 and 2 sample libraries. I am looking to do this for 2 reasons: 1) Better, more realistic sounds. 2) So I can use the sounds in Sibelius 5. Are these reasons justifiable? With the Opus sample libraries, am I correct in saying I can't use them in Sibelius 5? Do you feel it would be worth my upgrading? Thanks for any input. Matt Taylor

  • Musically there is not so much a difference, but using of Vienna Instruments and Ensemble is much, so much easier for you (and your computer....)

  • Re 1.) me thinks you won't upgrade here... sounds are the same but 24bit instead of 16bit. Sometimes less layers in the VI than in Horizon series. If you upgrade to VI Ext. and Plus libraries you get more variety than with Opus 1 & 2 with additional patches. Different workflow is considered to ease things though. Dunno anything about 2.)

  • Do you know whether i could use the opus samples within the vienna ensemble plug in if i were to purchase the vienna special extended package?? Or would i only just be able to use the vienna special edition sounds within the VE? Matt

  • Hi Matt. Unfortunately you can't use the Opus samples within Vienna Ensemble as it's custom made to run Vienna Instruments only.

  • If you want to use Opus with Sibelius, you will need to use a standalone of your sampler with Opus loaded, and route MIDI from Sibelius via a virtual MIDI cable.

With Vienna Instruments and Vienna Ensemble you can load your samples directly into Sibelius.

Would you mind explaining how I go about doing this? I thought the EXS24 sampler in Logic cannot be opened as a standalone..? Do you know whether the Opus sounds are Kontakt compatible? Thanks for your suggestions

  • I just realised..they would be kontakt compatible if i bought the kontakt license! stupid me

  • If you want to use the sounds with Kontakt there is still the possibility to buy a sidelicense for Kontakt. Contact VSL for that. Dunno about EXS24/Logic/Sibelius, perhaps there is also something possible.

I'm out of my depth here, but isn't it possible to send MIDI from Sibelius to logic, thereby allowing you to use the EXS player?

  • Hi all. Matt is right in saying EXS24 can't be opened as a standalone, it only works inside Logic. So if you were sending MIDI from Sibelius into Logic in order to play EXS24 samples, you'd have to to find a way of routing external MIDI data to the EXS4 track, which would require a working knowledge of Logic's 'Environment'. (Hate that word. It's nearly as bad as 'software'.)
