  • Is portamento always restricted to one octave?

That's pretty much my question. Is portamento always restricted to one octave? Can't find the answer in lists of articulations

  • It has been recorded all intervals up to an octave. In practical terms even an octave portamento is very rare.

However (and this is the crunch), when changing position or using portamento, the actual portamento interval heard is usually between a 3rd and a 5th.

In any case, to get this effect, you need to construct it using 2 separate MIDI tracks; one for the start note and one for the destination note, with a silent note after the note on the first track and a silent note before the note on the second track.

  • HI DG,

you are confusing me! That trick used to be necessary with the legace sample libraries.... no problem with the Vienna Instruments!

But maybe I´m missing something here....

The Zigane Portamento helps with some passages, but the common or garden change of position sound (not strictly speaking portamento) still needs 2 tracks. It is almost possible to do it with cell xFade, but it is rather dicey and doesn't work more often than not.

  • Hi DG,

thanks for the details! Just to not confuse smallfry (5 posts) - DG is an advanced user with a lot of tricks in his pockets - and also a very clear opinion when it comes to sound.
