  • Current Favourite Soundtrack?

    Hi

I thought it would be interesting to see what your favourite soundtrack is at the moment? Doesn't have to be recent. It would be good to hear what people think and then go and check them out. I will go first

    Casino Royal by David Arnold

I just love the brass and the sheer size of that soundtrack, check out the first track. There is also some beautiful string moments as well like track 6 - solace. I also love the mix of this album. If I could create something like that!!!

  • Yep that's a nice Arnold score... I've been listening to Silvestri's Contact and Powell's Bourne trilogy quite often lately.

  • Yeah, I really like Powell's Bourne score too. I like the mixture of electronic elements with the orchestra. I will go and check out Silvestri's Contact now.

  • I don't know why a lot of people are here so obsessed by soundtracks.

I recently got my first job in film scoring and I have to say I hate it.

Even if the producer is happy, I think it is very limiting.

I love movies, I love video and pictures, but I don't get it together in my mind during composing.

When I compose music, I focus on sounds, patterns, breaking of patterns, harmony progess etc.

But pictures do get in the way of music, IMHO.

So, I think, LOTR is great, is a brilliant masterpiece of work catering symphonics to the pictures, I can spend easily a day in bed with chips and diet coke all day watching and listening all 3 extended DVD's.

But I can never imagine myself doing this. This is like cooking sugarcoat to a schnitzel.

Listen to a real symphony. While watching a documention about Bruckner, I discovered his music recently. Now burn these soundtracks, in comparison.

    .

Too old for Rock n Roll. Too young for 9th symphonies. Wagner Lover, IRCAM Alumni. Double Bass player starting in low Es. I am where noise is music.
  • Sorry that soundtracks are not for you. I hope you find some other job that allows you to write orchestral music and get paid for it.

  • It's not my all time favorite but I'm really enjoying Mark Isham's POINT BREAK which was recently released after sitting in oblivion for years since the film's release in 1991. It's a nice marriage of synths, brass ensemble, strings and percussion. Isham uses some lovely harmonic progressions that encompass the transcend quality of the film narrative. AKA- it's a great score.
