  • VE upgrade question

Sorry if this has been asked before. I have been having the same problem as others with Finale 2008, as it opens VE each time. This is fine, except that I do everything on a macbook pro, and so Finale won't work unless my external hardrive is plugged in. I want Finale to be mobile, and saw that the problem was fixed in the VE upgrade. So can I just download the upgrade and not worry about the previous VE I had, or is there an uninstall process? If so, what is it? Thanks.

  • Anyone?

    Help?

  •  I can´t answer your Finale question right now, but we will check that and get back to you. The <Vienna Instruments Uninstaller> will uninstall VE too.

    Best regards,

    Maya

  •  I don't remember seeing a VI unsinstaller. Where can I find that?

And on Finale, I believe I read elsewhere on this forum that the VE upgrade fixed the problem. Now I just need to know how to go about the VE upgrade.

    Thanks

  •  Colin:

At least on my machine the latest version VE (2869) does NOT fix this problem - - Every time Finale is launched it attempts validate VE. This more problematic when running under OS 10.4.11 where the attempted validation can hang, running under OS 10.5.2 it is simply a wasted effort. There are workarounds for this problem.

Make an alias of the Components folder (MacHD/Library/Audio/Plugins/Components) and put it on the desktop.

Create another folder on the desktop  and name it something like Disabled Components.

Before launching Finale use the alias of the Components folder to open that folder

Remove the VE component from Components folder and put it in the Disabled Components folder.

    Launch Finale

After Finale has opened, move the VE Component back into the Components folder.

    Launch VE.

    This will work.

Another option is a rather buggy (but harmless) bit of freeware called Audio Units Manager available at:

    http://www.audiofile-engineering.com/audiounitmanager/

This provides you with a control panel that allows you to turn Audio Units on and off  - - it creates a Disabled Components folder within the Components folder - - and thus accomplishes the same thing as I've described doing manually. However, in its latest incarnation, it no longer shows the name of Vienna Ensemble - - you have to figure it out from the version number. The previous version did not retain its settings after a restart - - but I haven't tried that yet. But it does work and is a little less laborious than the manual method.

Finally, people have reported that this problem exists with some other plugins, most notably Synthogy's Ivory and Motu's Symphonic Instrument.  It appears that Finale flags these plugins as Native Instruments products. One has to hope that MakeMusic's contract with Native Instruments will soon expire so that the next version of Finale will be able to run all AU plugins directly.

  • Interesting development: I did what you said, and it opened fine without opening VE. But then it said it could not find SmartMusic SoftSynth playback. Now, I was under the impression that, when it opened VE, it wasn't using the VE to play back (even though it did sound better than I thought a normal midi playback thing would). But now I am wondering if it was using VE, because before, when I would start Finale and it opened VE, the playback worked fine, and I never checked the options to see what it was using for the sound (I've only had Finale a few days). Any idea what is going on? Thanks.

  •  Colin:

Check to see if you accidentally moved the SmartMusic Softsynth Component out of the Components folder. I do NOT recommend the updated version of Audio Units Manager (2.0.3) which came out today - - it is extremely buggy, previous version(2.0.2) worked imperfectly, but was ok.  New version does not show the name of Vienna Ensemble and succesfully made the Ozone 3 component disappear into the ether.

  •  Oops [:$]

You are so smart, Stevesong. It all works fine, now. Thanks so much.
