  • First attempt at AV6

    Ok be gentle :D

Put together this simple theme to try AV6 out on.   Using the Todd AO on stems (pre-delay - no tail) and then tail only on a master bus.

Scooped out a little 225hz on the master tail.

used the narrow - 8 m St to St on all predelays except the Vlns and cellos (used the Wide 10 m).

Making this stuff up as I go

Any suggestions (except get some new ears  )

  • Seems like you are totally there, Rob. I missed a tiny amount of sparkle after comparing to other recordings the like, but hey, that's just a matter of taste I guess. Congrats on a beautiful setup... now I hope for some more complex stuff to see if that you also get that working :D

  • Rob,

Beautiful! For that kind of musical material your AV setup is just wonderful!  You've convinced me to try the pre-delay on stems, tail on master stategy again even though I never had much sucess with it.  Just curious what samples your were using for this wonderful little demo.

Thanks for sharing, it was a joy to listen to! [:)]

  •  Yea thanks PolarBear - the thing with this room is the incredible 'warmth' - unfortunately it can also be a tad dull.  I threw Waves broadband eq on the master bus and gave about 3-4 db of the 9-12K.

Probably could add a bit more - or maybe add same EQ on master tail (or even many of the predelays)

    Worth experimenting on.

  • Thanks Brian,

Samples were AP I, epic horns, KLB, FLT, timp. BD, TR-6 (I think that is it)

I work on Cubase 4 and my 'master tail' is put on another group track (where everything is routed to.)  I tried an 'FX track' and for some reasons felt a 'build up' of sound doing it that way (with each group have a little of this 'send' on their track.)

In this example, I am controlling the 'level' of tail with wet/dry setting (set to 23%).   With the predelays like this I don't see a need for a lot of tail (which I kinda like). Tail mics are narrow - 8 m I think.

  • Here is a suggestion for "adjusting" the sound of the IRs:

Open an impulse file (preferably with tail) in an editor like SoundForge. Then check the frequency spectrum and see if it (overall) has a smooth curve/line downwards towards the higher frequencies. If there are really bumps in the middle/lower middle you can correct that with a high-end (linear phase) EQ.

First check the area below 80 Hz, maybe these impulses have not been corrected for subsonic noise (which is an inteherent by-product of deconvolving sweep recordings). Often you see a lot of energy in the 30 Hz downto 0 Hz (dc), which can seriously impair you mixes with the same incorrect energy. A very steep linear phase filter around 30 Hz can fix this.

Make sure to do this "mastering" after converting to 32 bit float or 64 bit and use high end plugins for dithering back to the original format. Contact me for more tips.

Take care with changing the volume (or normalizing) of IRs within a set! The proper way to do that (e.g. after EQ-ing and filtering out low stuff), is to find the loudest peak in the entire set and then to increase the volume of all IRs with the appropriate amount to make this peak just below 0.0 dB.

A bit off-topic, but maybe it can help. I regret not having this IR set! (not an Altiverb user). Is it also available with the AV demo????

    Cheers,

    Peter

  •  Wow thanks Peter[:)]

Although I have to admit telling ME to do this is like giving a loaded revolver to a child (in the wrong hands havoc could result[:$]

My best linear EQ is Voxengo's gliss - would that cut it or just cause issues and 'color' too much???

  •  Peter - one more thing the EQ in the AV engine sounds decent.

Does anyone use this.   I have found using it - especially on the 'tail' insert seems to tame the IR. Interested to see what other's opinions are on this EQ

    Rob

  • Hehe...

Well, in this case I would indeed suggest to use EQ within AV.

Is it possible to EQ the IR only and thus not the sound it is processing? Shouldn't make much difference, though...

    Best,

    Peter

  •  Yea Peter - pretty sure that only the IR is being affected as the EQ is 'within' AV.

    Anyone else confirm.

I can confirm that it sounds that way.

    Rob

---Really like this Todd AO room (but it will take some tweaking to get just right).   SvK - you know that room as well as anyone - what are your thoughts for tweaking it within AV?

    Thanks in advance.
