  • WARNING: Installation of Apple's ProKit 4.5 may cause VE related crash

    Installation of Apple's just released ProKit 4.5 under OS 10.4.11 may cause both Logic 8.0.1 and Digital Performer 4.6.2 to crash when one attempts to instantiate VE as a plugin in either program. This is true of the newest release of VE as well as the previous release. VI 1.1.4 does not crash under the same circumstances. (This on the G5 described below.) I will attempt a test running OS 10.5.1.

    If you encounter this problem, the fix is to uninstall the previous version of VE before updating. To do this, trash:

    the VE applications folder

    the VE component (Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plugins/Component

    the VE preferences  files:

    -com.vsl.vsldirs1.plist
-com.vsl.vslfrontend.plist
-com.vsl.appPresets.plist (if this one is not there, please do not worry!)
 from Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences



    the receipt files:
    
ViennaEnsembleOSX-2.0-Beta.pkg and ViennaEnsembleOSX-2.0.pkg 
from Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts


    Empty the trash, restart and install the newest version of VE.

    Simply throwing out the VE applications folder and component does not, at least in my experience, fix the problem.

    After you have installed the new version, open VE Directory Manager and add your VI samples folders to the list.

    I just checked mine...and it works fine in 10.5. Dual 2.0 G5 6 gig ram Logic 8 10.5

     I can confrim that, running under OS 10.5.1, this problem does not occur when using the previous version of VE (2779).

     Under OS 10.4.11, doing a complete uninstall of VE (2779) including trashing the VE component and preferences, followed by a new installation of the VE (2779) fixed the situation. I will now try an upgrade to VE (2869).

    Hi Steve

    Just wondered if you had any luck installing 2869 after your reinstall?

    I was about to install the update, but I have installed the Prokit, and would prefer to avoid the  dirsuption if possible.

    Sorry to treat you like a guinea pig, and thanks for blazing a trail for us lesser mortals!

     I installed 2869 using the method I described earlier - - of uninstalling the previous version, its component, preferences and receipt. It seems to work, but, in my experience, so far, 2869 seems a little less stable than the previous version - - at least when running under OS 10.4.11. (I will do some tests later with OS 10.5.1) Twice, so far, the 2869 standalone has crashed after being quit, giving the familiar "application has unexpectedly quit" error message. No harm was done, but previous versions never exhibited this behavior on my system. Both times this occurred, it happened immediately after a restart with no other applications running. If the previous version is working for you, I fhave found, so far, no particular advantage in the new version...loading times are about the same on my, now antediluvian, G5 system.

    Another oddity, although I don't know whether this has more to do with Logic 8 or VE, is that when a multi-channel instance of VE is instantiated in Instrument 1 and several different VI's are instantiatd on different channels within VE, Logic's event lists show all MIDI data for all instruments as occurring on channel 7. This however does not reflect what happens during playback - - which is normal. Furthermore, when the event list for each track is modified so that it shows the nominal channel to which each VI instance has been assigned, the file continues to play back correctly. I will try this with Logic 7.2.3. (I suspect that this has more to do with Logic 8 than with VE as Logic 8, in my experience, seems quite buggy with MIDI data such as notes inexplicably becoming invisible in the Arrange, Piano Roll and Event List windows, but nonetheless playing back correctly...and then becoming visible again by clicking around on the link and catch buttons and by deactvating or reactivating the record button in a selected track.)

    Thanks for elaborating on the 2869 situation.  The only reason I wanted to go for it, was because the previous build was buggy for me, when run as a Logic plugin (stable when used standalone), and I got an interim build from VSL which seemed more robust as a plugin, but included some debug routines.

    As I've been working fine with the standalone version, and have got used to working that way, it sounds like I may be safer sticking with what I know works.

    Weird what you're seeing with MIDI note channel info - are you sure it's not just your master keyboard transmitting on channel 7 (sorry if that's the ultimate dumb question)?  I'm always doing that, and then wondering why everything is on a weird channel.  I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I repro'.

    Thanks again for all your help.  I guess the next big update will be VE3 - and I guess you'll be the brave man who dives straight in there at 3.0! 😊

    You were absolutely right - - my master keyboard was set to channel 7.  However, I still can't figure out the invisble data - - and associated phenomena.

    For example, in Logic 8,  if I record CC data (e.g CC11) to an existing track, sometimes I can see the CC data but not the notes, sometimes the notes but not the data - - but almost never the both notes and CC data simultaneously.  Also, after recording CC data to a track I can no longer play the keyboard and hear anything unless the track is playing back.  Do you have any ideas about this?

    As to the VE 2869 situation, I can't make a recomendation one way or the other except to say that if what you are using now is working well, why change it. As I said, no harm was done by the 2869 crash on quit events, but, as I also noted, a successful installation - - at least after I downloaded and installed ProKit 4.5 - - required that I completely uninstall the previous version.

    As far as viewing CC and note data is concerned (I presume you're looking in th event list in Logic), the only reason you would not be able to see one or the other, is if you didn't have the small buttons in the top left corner of the Event Window toggled correctly.  Each buttons switches the display of different data types on and off.  I suspect you've probably checked this already though.

    Out of interest, can you see the data correctly in Piano-roll view, or is it actually missing completely.  If it's missing, I presume there's a bug in play somewhere.

    Don't know if that helps at all.

    Thanks for responding so quickly. This situation is rather weird - - this morning I can see notes and CC1 (mapped to CC11 in VI)  simultaeously in the piano roll view - which was not the case yesterday. However, in the event list, I can see notes and CC64 data, but no CC1 data while in the piano roll I cannot see CC64 data. Then if I highlight another track in the arrange window and then go back to original track and look at the event list, neither notes nor CC64 data are visible. All the event list filters are open.

    The other odditiy - once CC data has been recorded into a prexisting track the track is silent when I play the keyboard - - unless the transport is in play mode.  This does not occur when I manually write CC data in Hyperdraw. I'm baffled.....

    Mmmmm .... very strange Steve.  I can't say I'm seeing any of those issues here, also using Logic Pro 8.01 on an quad core Mac Pro, 10.4.11.

    It sounds like it's either a weird bug, or some of your controller data is being converted as it's recorded, or not mapped correctly, resulting in things like CC1 or CC11 data being converted to volume data, which results in the channel effectively being muted.  When you engage the transport, Logic automatically resets all your controllers, which then bumps the volume back up and enables channels to become audible again.

    You haven't got MIDI through enabled on your keyboard or anything strange like that have you?  Perhaps there's a MIDI loop somewhere which is contributing to the problems.  Might be worth looking in the Click and Ports level of the Environment in Logic as well, just to make sure there aren't any strange converters inserted into your incoming or outgoing MIDI chains.

    I'm sorry Steve, if it's none of those, I guess there's a bug in there somewhere - I can't really think of anything else.  Very strange.
