TODD AO Test for Altiverb .. looking for feedback
Hi guys. Well I've been testing out the TODD AO set for Altiverb for a while now. Lots of frustration as it is exquisitely hard to get it right.. Still don't know if I have but I have some tests to show and I'm looking for feedback to know if these sound good to anyone else. The whole point of course is to try and replicate the sound of the TODD AO stage .. and introduce some nice ambience. Making for a nice clear sound. There is the opportunity to add more reverb later, but at this point I just want a realistic .. and nice sound. . So please have a look in this folder . http://www.elvenmusic.com/public/Todd-AO-Test/ . .. where you'll find 2 files. These are remixes of 2 short cues from my Starship Farragut project, and are two fairly different types of cue. I think the overall sound of the virtual room is pretty good. But it helps to have other opinions. I've had no help at all from Altiverb, after posting on their forum. But I know you guys are always keen to try knew things. . Depending on the outcome I'll post the presets and some info on how I arrived at this so others with Altiverb and the TODD-AO IR set may try it out. All comments welcome. Even the negative ones .. although please try and do it constructively ... I've been pulling hair and crying over this template for weeks so be gentle. Hope you enjoy. . Heto ... PS .. Apologies for the sound of these demos being so low sampled .. wish I knew how apple managed to sample stuff in aac at 128 kpbs .. without having these problems.

Yeah I have been playing around a bit more with this. The demo you heard represents .. what I hope is .. the sound of the actual hall, which being a soundstage should be fairly dry .. yet big sounding. I'm now using another reverb (Space Designer) to add the artificial reverb on top of this. So far it seems to be quite nice. . It's been a fair job balancing out the room. At default the room IR's are far too boomy, and one really needs to take down the tail and early reflections to get anywhere near realistic. . I'll have something more soon. When I feel this sound is completely right I'll post some pics of the settings, and post the Altiverb and all other plugins used here, presets to my site. Thanks for commenting Jay ... from you this means a lot :D. I'll keep you posted.

Hetoreyn,
Have an updates on this TODD AO room and settings? Just trying to get through this new copy of AV - of course if I can get the TODD AO sound....[:)]
Are you using the IR for the predelays (each group / instrument) and then another instance for the tail?) You mentioned Space designer was used on the tail. Was the TODD AO tail just not right??

Here's another 'basic' question. I have found that with Todd AO some EQ is needed - do you guys put EQ insert BEFORE the AV6 insert) on the various 'pre-delay busses'? Are you EQ'ing the tail (on the master bus) as well.
Just curious.

The Todd AO verbs require NO Eq (the new set by alti-verb) They just need to be used CORRECTLY......you will need to set up 6 altiverbs.......3 for the ERs only AND another 3 for the tails only.........violins and violas get sent to the 3.m ER......make sure the ER is just as loud as the vienna direct sound from stem (all Altiverbs set to 100% wet and DON NOT use their "direct sound" system).....Next up are the woodwinds....these get sent to the 8m ER......here you want the ER 3-4 db LOUDER than the Vienna direct sound..........etc, etc....you get it?............if you are meticulous about setting up the various instrument groups to the ER (early reflection busses) IT SOUNDS AMAZING. Yes....NO altiverb "direct" stuff....instead use dry vienna coming from the stem.........the reason you use seperate instances for the tails...is for more control.........just try it........ SvK

. Well it seemed balanced to me, but I never claim to be an expert. If the percussion goes further back it just gets swamped in reverb. And the horn patch is the Epic horns. Legato.@Justin Matthews said:
Hetoreyn,
The mix seemed a bit unbalanced to me - the percussion is too far forward and strings are buried.
It's quite an odd sounding IR - lots of 'front' and tail but not much middle if that makes sense.

p.s. what patch is the horn patch that I have heard in some of your demos?

Hi SvK,
I don't know how I missed this but just a question or two.
I think you use Logic, but in Cubase should these 'six AV instances' be set up on six FX tracks and then the various stems are bussed there?
Of course we can 'power pan' in VE but right now I have a seperate instance for each type of instrument (flts/EH, OB and BA, Violins, Violas, etc.). I am using AV's stage placement to put them on the stage where they belong. I think I see what you plan is. VE power pans and your three ER busses capture the proper depth. Do I have that right?
What about the 3 tails? Why do you need 3 seperate ones? Wouldn't one (balance for each section properly by 'sending amount' - be enough.
Sorry for all the questions - but thanks for your input and abilities here.
