  • Can a G5 Dual2Ghz / 8gig RAM run 2 Vienna Ensemble stand-alones for access of all RAM?

TEAM VIenna..........I have a old "Apple G5 dual 2Ghz 8 gig of RAM with Leopard" available as an additional slave machine..........Can I use all 8 gig of RAM by running 2 stand-alone instances of Vienna Ensemble?......thanx......SvK

  • anyone? SvK

  • My experience suggests that you may run out of processing power before running out of RAM - - at least that is the case on my dual 2.5GHz G5 - - at least when running VE standalone as the MIDI playback object of Finale 2008 or Logic 7. In other words, at least in my setup, clicks and pops appear before RAM is fully used. Oddly enough, on my machine, VE standalone appears to consume slightly more processing power when used as a VI host than does Logic 7. Logic 8 appears to consume more processing power than either. When I get a MacPro, I'll let you know how well my G5 functions as an ancillary machine.

  • thanx! SvK

i can only second stevesong's statement ... 2 instances of VE is relative (how many tracks, which patch/matrix/presets, release on/off, crossfades, parallel cell, latency, ect ..)

possibly this post gives you an idea what could be expected (maybe trade the 2 x 2,5 GHz against better performance with the newer version)

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • SvK, I remember you as the user who had a farm of 8 Mac Mini's. Perhaps that has changed or I am misremembering.

In any case, the odd benefit of a Mac Mini is that it does not have the RAM capacity to overload its CPU.

Contrarily, my G5 1.8 DP has a (relatively) capacious 8 GB, and anything above 4.5 GB loaded has been virtually worthless in regards to live playback. A 2.5 DP will get you farther, but I still think you're throwing good money after bad. By 2005 standards, the G5 is an awesome computer, but it's shrinking with alarming speed in the rear view mirror.

  • hey steve i am using a dual 2.5 G5 with 8 gig o ram as my slave

my setup RAX with 8 vienna VI's loaded & maxing out its' memory

then Logic running VSL pro and SAM maxing out Logic's limit

and when needed Vienna Ensemble to use up the rest

i have less than a gig left over

    i hope that helps
