    Will the performance tools work on say a scale played by 1st, 2nd and 3rd trumpets each on a different note (C-E-G) or are they for SOLO instruments only?

    That depends on the tool.
    The alternation and repetition tools works in polyphonic mode also.
    The legato tool only monophonic. If you want to play polyphonic legato-lines with one instrument, you have to use different midi channels.
