  • PC with 16 Gigs Ram

I was going to put together an 8 gig PC with the latest Intel board and 3.0 Core 2 Duo etc but a friend said I could just as easily put together a 16 gig machine. I asked about performance issues but he said no problem as long as I have 4 seperate drives for streaming (assuming I have large sample collections on each drive like VSL.) If it's just as easy to build a single 16 gig machine as an 8 gig and the cost isn't quantum in difference I figure why not. One simple question is what mother boards load 16 gigs and must these be servers or are there more standard boards that will load that kind of ram as well. Thanks, DC

  • It is much simpler to put together an 8GB machine, because the required components are much more common. You are correct that for 16GB you need a server type board, and the RAM for these tends to be more expensive, when you want more than 8GB. Personally I would wait until Herb produces some figures for his 16GB machine before spending any money. I would also check things such as soundcards very carefully, as some people seem to be having problems. I also have a feeling that your choice of CPU is much more limited.

  • Thanks DG. I figured that was the case with components and ram etc. I may just build the 8 gig machine now and upgrade another so I have two solid 8 gig machines. With two 4 gig P4's and a mac mini I should be able stop cutting corners on articulations and instruments loaded. Is Herb going to be posting those figures on that machine? Herb?
