  • Workaround for Finale VE interaction

As noted on earlier threads launching Finale 2006-2008, also initiates a launch of Vienna Ensemble. Finale is, of course, limited to using plugins made by or "powered by" Native Instruments, so this launch has no practical positive effect. My guess is that Finale is launching VE in an attempt to validate it - - which would explain the fact that it launches VE every time Finale is launched. Under OS 10.5.1, the delay is minimal, but it is a serious problem under OS 10.4.11 as Finale appears to freeze - - but eventually does open if one waits 5-6 minutes (This5-6 delay occurs even when one has previously launched the VE standalone to avoid having to go through the license checking process while Finale is trying to launch - - if the VE standalone has not first been launched, the delay is even longer). In any case it would appear that Finale misinterprets something in the VE Component (MacHD/Library/Audio/Plugins/Components) that it reads as meanng that VE is an NI product. It did not do this with first beta release of VE, not does it do this with the Vienna Instruments sample player, Ozone 3, Pianoteq, Altiverb 6, etc.

While awaiting a fix for this problem one can do the following:

Remove the VE Component from the Components folder (found as I said above, in MacHD /Library/Audio/Plugins/Components) and put it in a new folder on the desktop.

    Launch Finale

Then, if you wish to use the VE standalone as a playback object for Finale

Set Finale's MIDI output to an IAC bus

Put the VE Component back in the Components folder

Launch the VE standalone and assign its MIDI inputs to the appropriate IAC bus.

    Work in Finale.

    Quit Finale

    Quit VE

Remove VE Component from the Components folder before relaunching Finale. (It is not necessary to restart the computer.)

This is, obviously, somewhat inconvenient, but it does work and avoids long delays in Finale's Launch.

I hope this helpful to those who have encountered this problem.

  • Stevesong, I'm using both Finale 2006b and VSE /VI / VE and I would like to say that, Yes launching Finale make VE starting too but doing this in less than 20 second! Finale is not freezing at all...? You may even leave VE Service run behind the scene causing no problem! This on a G5 PPC, 10.4.11 8Gig ram.... Did you update your VI and VE to the last version available? VE Software 2.0.2779 (2007-12-08) VI Software OS X PPC 1.1 (2007-11-24) Have a look there: http://vsl.co.at/en/68/375/377/239.htm So, Hope this will help Sincerely

    Thanks for your comments.

I can't explain why my experience is so different from yours except that I'm running Finale 2008a while you are running Finale 2006b.  I have the latest versions of VE and VI software. As I've mentioned elsewhere, the delay when running under OS 10.5.1 is minimal - - like the one you describe, but I and some others experience a long 5 - 6 minute delay when launching Finale 2008 when runnning under OS 10.4.11 if the VE component is installed in the Components Folder. I should also add that my startup disk is well maintained - I repair permissions and rebuild the directory with Alsoft's DiskWarrior on a regular basis.

Whether the delay is short or long, it appears that Finale is attempting to validate VE every time it (Finale) is launched. This suggests that there is something in the VE component that Finale interprets as a sign that VE is an NI plugin. If one could identify what this sign is and change it, one might be able to eliminate this behavior. Remember that this did not occur with the first beta release of VE.

In the meantime, I hope that my workaround will be helpful to those whose experience is similar to mine.

  • Stevesong, Don't you think that Finale must also do his part of the work and be open to ALL AU plug-ins? Would made one of the best music soft in the world! Nice holiday time... AL

It would, of course, be ideal if Finale could use plugins other than those made or "powered by" Native Instruments. However, the current limitation on Finale's plugin capabilities is the result of a contractual agreement between MakeMusic (the company that makes Finale) and Native Instruments. I have no idea of the duration of this contract.

In the meantime, like me, quite a few people who need to use Finale and Vienna Ensemble have run into the problem I described. I found a workaround and I wanted to share it with others while we await a better solution from either MakeMusic or VSL.

    Cheers,

    Stephen

  • I have been having exactly the same problem that Stephen describes, very long delays launching Finale 2008 (and 2008a), on both my desktop and laptop, and waiting....... for VE to launch. Thanks very much for the workaround, Steve. Michael

  •  Michael:

    Glad to be of help.

  • I am writing to ask if this vsl/finale interaction problem is (still) being looked at by the vsl team. Thanks, Michael

  • Bump... Any news, any hope? Possible preference option to exclude Finale or other programs that do not play well with VE?

  • Wow...It's march 2009 and this is still a problem with Finale 2008b.r1 and Vienna Instruments Second Edition. I don't have my vienna key on me (I travel, and have one too few USB ports...I guess I should start carrying my USB hub, but it's a pain). I literally couldn't get finale to launch at all. Anyway Stephen your solution worked. Thanks for your help. I personally know two other people that are having problems launching finale 2008 with vienna instruments. When are you guys going to fix this?

  • bump...still no resolution for this...still a problem at home and at the lab. Also, when I put my component files back, VE and VI wouldn't work. I reinstalled VE and VI, and it still wouldn't work. Deleted and added the paths again in directory manager, and it wouldn't work either. Finally, I had to delete those component files and reinstall, and then it started working again. Just FYI.

  • And now finale won't start again. I'm uninstalling VSL. This is terrible.

  • Hi Jordon:

I notice that you are using 2008 and I am sure that there are good reasons for this. I just wanted to mention that 2010 works with VSL, though there are stuck notes from time to time with HP.
