    Depends on the numbers of velocity layers, and the length of the note (especially for brass instruments).

    Dynamic patches with single velocity layer around 2 to 3 sec length are a good reference.

    I think also a good choice to check out dynamic response of instruments are the dyn perf-repetitions.
