    I've been having alot of fun with VSE over the past few months, and my system needs an upgrade BADLY. I am currently running a quite old AMD Athlon XP 3200 2.1 ghz processer, with only 512 RAM and a soundblaster soundcard...

    First of all, I know that my system isn't even near the kind of system I need to run VSE efficiently, and I know that there are no tricks to getting more ram than you have, other than just buying more, of course. So you need not worry about extremely rudimentary questions...

    So, I'm getting a new system, and I have a few questions, 'cause I know that some of you guys have monster setups:

    1. Is a Core2Duo 3.1 ghz going to be fast enough?

    2. Will 4 gigs of RAM be enough for me to take full advantage of nearly the entire orchestra with multiple articulations (i.e. not just a quartet)?

    3. Do you guys have any suggestions for a soundcard that's under $200 USD?

    Hi,

    I have a 2,4 Ghz Core 2 Duo with 'only' 3 Gig of Ram, and the SE runs smoothly on this system (iMac),even when I have active plug uns like RMX beside the VI.

    Here is a short piece I have done with this setup, it is a quite big orchestration and I never had CPU overloads or related problems.

    For a souncard maybe check out the M-Audio mobile interfaces, the are good and you can use them also with Pro tools.

    Thanks for your help, Christof! This really helps alot. I'll be sure to get Windows XP x64 so the other 2 gigs of my ram isn't wasted. Oh, and I enjoyed your composition alot, it's not just a quartet! hehe

    I'm so eager to get my new system running. I think I've decided on this soundcard: http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOAP2496

    It's pretty cheap, and I talked to a few users of this card, they seem to be pleased. Is this just a kiddie card though? Would I need something more? I don't plan on doing any sort of recording, and I use USB midi for my 88-key...

    I think this card is good even if it is cheap,  24-bit 96kHz conversion should be fine.

    be aware it looks like m-audio does not provide XP or VISTA 64bit drivers for the the audiophile 2496 ...

    M-Audio doesn't seem to provide 64bit drivers for anything. I'm certainly going to have to look for another MIDI interface than Midisport 4x4.

    Both E-Mu and M-audio have soundcards under $200 that work fine.  And M-Audio does have 64-bit drivers: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.betadrivers.  They're called "beta" but they've been beta for something like 2 years now...

    Your question is tough to answer because you can make just about any system work; you're obviously using it right now.  The bottom line is that the more RAM you have, the faster your hard drive, and the faster your processor, the easier it will be to use the samples.  The easiest way to work is (or at least should be) to set up a slave machine with the full orchestra ready to go.  Unfortunately, the VE has some MIDI problems that prevent that from happening right now.  I have yet to come across anybody who is using it that way (it doesn't work for me...).  Running everything (sequencer and samples) on a single machine seems to work fine, but you're stuck loading 5 GB of samples every time you switch projects.

    I can tell you this: I used to run the Opus libraries using three machines with 2 GB each.  I've tried using the SE and VE exclusively (i.e. without Opus 1/2) and my workflow slowed WAY down because I'm stuck on one machine and I have to bounce tracks all the time.  So, right now, I'm still using a combination of Opus 1/2 and SE under the VE.  So bear that in mind as you make your decisions.

    Again, you can make just about anything work.  It all comes down to how much time and patience you have 😊.
