  • Anybody running multiple standalone VE on a slave machine under XP64?

If so, what's your setup?  I get terrible audio performance from one of the instances; one works fine.  I'm running XP64 w/ 8 GB of RAM.  Each instance of VE holds about 2.6 GB of samples and uses different ADAT outputs on my RME HDSP 9632 souncard.

I can't get MIDI to work with the VE when I load more than 3 GB of samples into a single instance so I'm trying the multiple-instance approach, but then the audio doesn't work...

    Thanks,

  • regames,

I'm running two slaves, each with 8 gigs RAM, XP64, and Frontier Wavecenter PCI ADAT cards. Getting good performance and no midi problems. I'm wondering... your midi problem sounds very strange. So when you open one standalone instance of VE, what happens when you reach 3 GB? Does it crash? You should be able to load around 7 to 7.5 gigs. Is anything running in the background? Are all 8 gigs of your RAM showing up in windows?

This may be a rhetorical question, but are you running the 64 bit version of VE?

The only problem I'm having at the moment with the slaves is that I have to open the 32 bit version of VE first, then close it and open the 64 bit version -- that's once per computer session; as in, after I've done it once, I don't have to open the 32 bit unless I switch off the computer. If I open the 64 bit VE first, I get a crash.

  • Mahlon - Yes, I'm using the 64-bit version.  I don't get any crashes, I just get intermittent MIDI response as soon as I load more than 3 GB of samplrs.  I have a separate thread on it here: http://community.vsl.co.at/forums/t/17408.aspx

I can get a couple of MIDI ports to work every now and then but never all four that I'm trying to use.  Sometimes 1 and 3 work, sometimes only 4, sometimes 2 and 4, most of the time none, etc...  It must be a code problem somewhere.

Are you running the SE?  (My guess is no.)  I've had lots of responses from folks saying the Cube or certain libraries work just fine but I still haven't heard from anybody running the SE on a single slave with a full orchestra loaded.

When I load separate VE instances (so that neither passes the 3 GB limit), the MIDI works fine.  But then the audio won't work...  How's that for a catch-22?

That's why I started this separate thread to see if I could get the two VE instances to work.

Tanuj - if your MIDI works the way it's supposed to, you won't need separate instances.  My audio works just fine so long as I'm only running one instance.  Are you going to be running the SE?

    Thanks,

  • rgames,

Sorry, I don't know what the problem is, but that doesn't sound like a VE problem per se. Have you contacted tech support? Which midi interface are you using? Does the hammerfall have midi integrated?

  • Yes - I've been talking with VSL for many weeks on this problem...  that's one of the reasons I bought the new soundcard and motherboard - to match their setup.

I've tried three different soundcards and MIDI interfaces: E-Mu 1212m, HDSP 9652, and HDSP 9632 (they all have integrated MIDI).  I've also tried MIDI Over Lan.  They all behave the same.  I have two MOTU 4x4 MIDI boxes on order (might as well waste more money on the problem, right?) but I seriously doubt they'll behave any differently.

So, I've been through a LOT of different hardware.  Why do you think it's not a VE problem?  I'm not certain where else to look...

    Thanks,

  • well rgames,

I'v e spoken too soon. I've downloaded the VE player build 2781 and now, it seems like I can't get my midi to behave quite right. I've nothing definite yet because I can't re-create it exactly. But at some point when I'm loading my VE project which containns about 6.5 GB of samples, suddenly VE stops responding to MIDI input. I've got a MIDIsport 4x4 as the midi interface, and MIDI is leaving SONAR and going out through the interface. It looks like it's just not getting picked up at VE. When I manually press the VE 'keyboard' on the VE interface, my patches play and the slave computer send back audio to my DAW. BUt I can't get VE to respond to incoming MIDI.

This is the first time that it's happened. But this is also the first time I've loaded this large project into VE. I'm going to do some more experimenting to see if I can reproduce it, or at least where the break happens.

This may be related to your issue. It may not. Don't know yet.
