     But was the new VST instrument released in time for the last years nominations?

    And pricing might offcourse come into play, and no doubt about it, there is a substantial price leap from Miroslav Philharmonic to VSL.

    But it seemed they were awarded for 2007 though.


  • i don't want to appear picky, but to me it looks like VSL is also the winner 2006 (at least that's my information) though miroslav is listed as first entry for nominees.

  • I was suspicious about why Miroslav had a look in. It is hit and miss but mostly great for the price but can't be compared to anything by VSL. I wonder if anyone has a personal 2nd choice after VSL? (I hear the East West stuff is supposed to be good)

  • I own most symphony libraries including HALion Symphonic Orchestra, MOTU SI, and Miroslav Phil (as well as all East West orchestral libs) and honestly the ones that get most use are Vienna SE and EW Platinum Pro XP. I find the two marry quite nicely in spite of what some say, You just cannot beat the VSL performance legatos. :) Oh, and their Upright Bass is simply stunning.

  • I have the entire Miroslav collection as well as the Cube, and used Miroslav extensively before it was completely superceded by exponentially more detailed sampling found in VSL, East west and Sonic Implants.  It has beautifully recorded samples and playing, but only a few samples for each instrument and articulation stretched to fill the playing range.  With only one or two velocities.  Also, absolutely nothing approaching legato-alternation-repetition programming. It is just single note samples assigned to a few keys.  In sheer quantity of data it is almost non-existent compared to VSL.  An example is to compare the entire violin solo in Miroslav to VSL solo violin. The differences are megabytes vs. gigabytes.

    So comparing it to VSL is like comparing a Roman chariot to a Ferrari.   Though it was a very well-made chariot.

    I was going to post something to this effect, but I wasn't certain if the Miroslav re-release included either new recordings or samples previously recorded that had been omitted from the initial package. I'll assume now that neither is the case.

    The Miroslav library was recorded for hardware samplers. I doubt that any of them held more than 128 MB. And that was for the WHOLE sample, as there was no streaming.

    I'll tip my hat to the Miroslav marketers, because they managed several wrings of the same washcloth. Most of us cut our teeth on the Miroslav library (the first high-profile effort to exhaustively sample the orchestra), so my memories of it are too fond to be unkind.

    Somewhere around 1999, when streaming began to prove itself, a new Vitous library was ripe to be re-recorded. Its name equity was solid among mock-up artists, and a new Vitous offering could have cornered the high-end market a second time.

  • Yeah, I agree on that.  The recordings were very good and beautifully played, but just not detailed enough to compete with what exists now.  You end up faking too many things...
