  • Using a slave with VI/VE or anything (on a mac)

Ok, so I've been researching and pondering on setting up an unused G5 as a slave for most of VI/VE. I have the following:

Main Machine: Intel Mac Quad 3.9ghz, 8gb RAM, logic studio pro (has optics in/out, no audio card/interface)

    Apogee Ensemble (has optic in/out)

I'd like to some or most of VI/VE on the G5. Is there an easy way to do this with little or no cost?

I'm wondering if I can run an optic cable from the G5 to the Ensemble, or even to the IntelMac, but I don't think you can select inputs from two sources at the same time in logic, unless there's an app I'm missing. Will the optic cable this way give me at least 8 channels of audio? Or do I need to buy an audio card for the G5 to transfer audio? Also, what's the best way to transfer MIDI? All my MIDI devices are USB, so no MIDI in/out directly on the IntelMac.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi

You can create an aggregate audio device so you can use the optical and ensemble in logic. Open audio midi setup in your utilities folder, go to the menu and select Create aggregate device, name it say MyAudio, then in the list select the optical and ensemble. When you open Logic select MyAudio in your audio dropdown and you will be able to access the inputs an outputs of both your optical and your ensemble.

    Hope this helps!
