  • Vienna Ensemble and Finale 2006

My sincere apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere, but I would very much like to use Vienna Instruments Special Edition with Finale 2006 with the same ease as GPO.  Does Vienna Ensemble facilitate this?  Will Human Playpack work?  If so, is there a tutorial available that describes how to make them work together peacefully?

Thank you so much for helping me.  I've very excited by what Vienna Ensemble seems to mean to Finale users.

    Thanks again,

  • Theroetically, Finale 2006 will work Vienna Ensemble by addressing it through the IAC drivers. However, Finale 2006 has a serious playback bug that affects all external playback devices - - including, but not restricted to, software sample players addressed via IAC. (In my experience this bug affected playback of Kurzweil K2600 and  a Windows PC running Gigastudio as well as software sampers running on the same computer as Finale 2006.) Eventually I detected the fact that Finale 2006 was sending extraneous sync messages in its MIDI data stream and that this was the caused playback of external devices  to be marred by stuck or missing notes. This bug was eventually acknowledged by MakeMusic and is not present in Finale 2007 or 2008. (However Finale 2007 had other problems - - most notably very slow operations in the MIDI Tool window in the Mac version. This was corrected in Finale 2008..) My advice is if you want troublefree playback and fluid workflow, use Finale 2005 or Finale 2008 - - both of which are free of these bugs. If you must use Finale 2006, there is a workaround for PPC Mac Users. Download MIDI Patchbay 1.0.1 from the following website:

    http://pete.yandell.com/software/

With MIDI Patchbay you can create a configuration which aims the IAC outputs set in Finale's MIDI Setup dialog box to the IAC port of Vienna Ensemble (or any other standalone). For some reason interposing an appropriate MIDI Patchbay configuration between Finale 2006 and its external playback objects (in this case VE) seems to filter out the anomalous sync data that is sent by Finale 2006 and so playback anomalies are far less frequent.

It is important to note that you cannot combine Finale GPO instantiated as a plugin within Finale and Vienna Ensemble as Finale is limited (by a contract agreement with Native Instruments) to plugins made by or "powered by" Native Instruments. On the other hand, once you set playback to MIDI playback in Finale (and turn off the lay by NI plugins option) you can run any standalone sample player addressed through IAC. If, for example, you have the full version of GPO, you could combine it with VE by running it as a standalone on a different IAC port from that assigned to VE.

Human Playback will work with VE in terms of dynamics and tempo but it will most likely be necessary to tweak some of the settings in Human Playback preferences and to choose the "Incorporate Data" option so you can use suitable settings for dynamics. Human playback will not work immediately with keyswitches in VE - - unless you set up your Vienna Instrument matrices to correspond to the keyswitch settings in GPO. However, VE allows much more flexible ways of changing patches (and many more patches - - theoretically up 1728 patches per MIDI channel (you will likely run out of RAM before this) than are possible with GPO (or any other sample player). Take a look at the tutorial videos on this website to get an idea of what I mean.

Finally, you can if you want - - since you have a PPC Mac - - use the "Ambience" Plugin that came with  pre Kontakt Player 2 versions of Finale and GPO. While it is a decent sonding reverb, it is, in no way, the equal of a product like Altiverb - - but Ambience has the virtue of being something you already own if you have Finale 2006 or the full version of GPO.

    I hope this helpful.

    Good luck!
