  • Vienna SE demo tutorial problems

I have downloaded the files for the VSL SE demo project but I can't get the either of the DP5.1 project files to open. I also copied the folder "Special Edition Demo#1_Presets" to my Custom Data Folder but none of the presets appear in VI. Any help appreciated! 10.4.10 DP 5.13 VI SE

Obviously there are compatibility problems between DP 5.12 (in which the project was created) and 5.13. I can´t help you at the moment with this and need to contact Motu myself.

    Best regards,

    Maya

  • I don't think that's it, I have tried opening in DP 5.11 as well as 5.13 Looking in the Finder the project files come up as unix executable files - I think this is the problem but I'm not computer literate enough to know what to do with them!

  • wait - you are saying you don't see the presets even if they are in your custom data folder? ... please double check ....

noticing just the DP files have no file-extension i've been told DB does not need or like (can't remember exactly) them and takes every extension as project file. double clicking them in the finder might not work though ... tried the *open* dialog?

  • Yes, I put the presets for the SE demo project into my custom data folder but they do not appear in presets of VI - first I tried putting the folder in like this: User/Vienna Instruments Custom Data/Special Edition Demo*1_presets/01_flute,fxp .... etc etc

.... then I tried putting the presets there without the 'Special Edition Demo*1_presets' folder In both cases no presets appear in VI - I just see the normal VSL SE presets. (yes I relaunched VI before checking in case it needed to refresh folder contents)

    ------------------

RE the DP project files: Yes I tried double clicking in the Finder (with and without DP already launched) and I also tried opening from DP's file menu... nothing in either case. .. (DP's file menu 'open' dialog shows the two files as greyed out) I also went to the file info and manually selected DP to be the default application to open it with... again no joy...

Edited to reformat this post in Firefox - it seems Safari (v3.03) was ignoring my paragraphs and bunching everything up into one block of text!

  •  Orchestralalala,

Have you perhaps previously installed the Vienna Ensemble? If you have, there is now a new Custom Data Folder in Macintosh HD/Users/Shared - in this case, please copy the SE Demo Preset folder to this new location and please check the Custom Data Folder settings in your Directory Manager so they point to this folder allright. Please do not forget to quit Vienna Instruments/Vienna Ensemble before you launch Directory Manager!

Concerning your DP problem: please select f.i. the file "Special Edition Demo#1_DP5_1" in the finder and hit Command-I to open the Info window. There, you can find a menu at "Open with:", which should give you the option to open the file with Digital Performer. Please select the application and try to open the Demo file now - does that make a difference?

    Best, Marnix

I already tried that ... but still no joy ...

Anyway, now that I have the presets sorted I can just make my own demo project using the raw midi - which I can open no probs.

    Thanks for the help!

  • I'm having the same problem with DP5.11. Have tried all the various ways of opening the files to no avail. I'd really like to open the DP file in order to see the results Christian achieved with the built in effects. This is such a fantastic resource guys, can anyone help me to use it? Thanks.

Although I have 'moved on' with my life so to speak - I'd still like to be able to open that project and have a look if anyone can fix it! 😊

  •  Hi,

we were also surprised that the Special Edition Demo Song doesn´t open in DP 5.11.....

I´n not a DP user, so please excuse the maybe stupid question: What speaks against an upgrade to DP 5.12?

    Best,

    Paul

  • Not a stupid question. For no other reason than I haven't upgraded it yet I've got one machine running 5.11. I have also tried on a different machine running 5.12 and that doesn't work either. Neither of the files are recognized as DP files; it believes they're unix exe files and no amount of telling the mac which application to use will persuade DP to open it. I've just looked in the folders for the other DAW options and all the files are listed as unix exe files, so I suspect it's more basic than a DP compatibility issue. Any thoughts?

I already outlined the nature of the problem in the third post of in this thread on 11-17-2007. The files are unix exe and are simply not recognized, it is not simply a DP version incompatibility.

  • to be more precise:

OS X or DP is _assuming_ they are UNIX executables what cannot be, because the files have been created and packed on a mac (OS X 10.4.9 IIRC) - what took me wonder from start is that i've been assured DP does not create and need file-extensions .... very uncommon for an OS X app ...

  • Try to open the files by using the "open with" dialogue box in OS X:

DP doesn´t use any file extensions (please ask MOTU why), that is why it shows up as "UNIX" file, which is a general identifier.

  • Tried that one already. OSX doesn't suggest DP as an option and even when I navigate to it myself nothing happens. DP becomes the active application but nothing else happens.
