  • Just purchased SE - Do I have to have the Extended version loaded?

    Hello Everyone

I have just purchased the Special Edition (and Elements) part of the VSL. After a few installation problems I am now up and running; and very much enjoying the ease of use of the VI Plug in and the high quality of the sounds. I have installedon both my main machine (Mac Pro) and my laptop (MacBook).

However, I find it very off-putting to keep seeing "L2" displayed against instruments that I can't use (because I haven't purchased the Extended library) . Is there any way I can remove instruments from the list that are in the Extended library? More importantly, can I remove the samples from my hard disc for the Extended library. Seems such a waste if I have to use 54Gb of disc to store both Basic and Extended if all I'm using is Basic. On my laptop disc space is at a premium. if I could recover the few Gb that contain the Extended part of the librar, I could install several other AU plug-ins.

    Thanks in advance

  • I don't think you can remove the names from the list until the demo period is up, and you certainly can't remove the samples from your hard drive, except by a process of trial and error.

  • Hello DG

    Thanks for your lightning-fast response!

I had a feeling I was going to be "stuck" with many Gb of samples on my disc that I can't use. That design decision seems very odd to me. I realise that VSL are trying to persuade you to buy the Extended library, but to continue to waste disc space (on a laptop) is annoying.

  • However, your internal drive is probably too slow for a streaming sample player, so I guess that you might have to get an external drive anyway.

  •  Hello again DG.

Good point - but I have replaced my macBook drive with a 5400 250 Gb. I know that 7200 would be preferably but I couldn't find a 250Gb drive at that speed. The 5400 speed works well for all my other sample libraries via Kontakt (such at EWQLSO Gold) so I had hoped the 5400 would be fast enough. [H]

Still no excuse to use up my disc space on samples I can't use  [:)]

  • Hello again DG

I owe you and the guys at VSL an apology. After having looked more carefully at the the product Description of SE – it does clearly state that the entire library (basic plus extended) is installed and that they “can’t be separated due to structural database requirements.”

Although I still find this odd and irritating, at least I WOULD have known about this if I’d read up about SE more thoroughly before purchasing!
