HI, My Names Daniel Shuttlewood and I recently bought the VSL Pro Edition Cube EXS 16bit. Now I’ve looked through this website countless times so impressed with the compositions created by each one of you and I now wish to do the same but it seems in my haste to be up there with you guys I went and bought the wrong thing. As stated above I have the Cube, pro edition, but what it seems I REALLY wanted was the "Vienna Instruments". Can anyone tell me the main difference between the two and if it’s worth getting that as well? What would I gain etc etc? I’ve read over and over the fact that this software can literally read your mind (change style/technique of a solo violin while you play, which my cube seems not able to do). This then is very frustrating as I've just spent over 2000£ on them. My Cube came with 4 main DVD's, Brass and Woodwinds, Strings, Percussion, Performance set. These are good but like I said there not what I was really hoping for. Please if someone out there reads this and has the heart to help me out I would be so so great full. I’m working on a film score at the moment and I need this thing to work as I hoped it would. Thanks. Dan

  • Hi Daniel,

If you ever decide to upgrade to Vienna Instruments Symphonic Cube you would get a discount of 2529 £.

So i think you investment is "safe", because your potential discount is higher than your initial investement.

    best

    Herb

  • First off let me express my sincere gratitude for your reply, information and advice.  I will have a look at what the asking price is for the Vienna instruments symphonic cube and see whether or not I can afford it with the discount, see I’m a student at Coventry University, England, so don’t have access to a mad amount of cash but I really need this both for my dissertation and the film I'm doing. I still don’t understand what the main difference is between my pro edition cube and the Vienna instruments Cube? How much better is it, what can it do that mine cant etc? Please again let me state my gratitude for your reply. Daniel Shuttlewood

  • Sorry again would you be able to tell me how much i would then need to spend on the upgrade, as as far as i can see with this discount youve said i could save and the cube being a 2,600 i would only need to spend an extra 71£ for the upgrade? If so where do i sign? Also thats for the standard edition, if i was to want the "full" edition how much extra would i need to invest? It has two prices and i cant tell if the "your price" is with that extra 2529£ already taken off. Thanx again to who ever writes back. Dan

  • Dan, there is no discount on the standard library; the discounted price is for the extended.

I can't answer whether or not you would be happier with the new product, but I have not used my Pro Edition for nearly two years, and have been glad not to.

    DG

  • ok so its not for the standard, but is the discount still for the"new" vienna intruments as apose to the one ive got (the "old" pro edition cube)?  I really want the best of the best when it comes to these samples, not the best of 3 years ago......... Thankyou for your reply DG, please when you can write back, need to get this stuff ordered asap but dont want to make the same mistake twice. Daniel Gordon Shuttlewood (DGS)

  • also still wondering if that is correct and i can get the new vienna instruments symphonic cube extended edition what that will do price wise, if your willing to share your wisdom couldnt thank you enough. DGS

  • OK here goes:

    1) Everyone has to pay full price for the Standard Edition.

    2) The discount applies to the Extended part only.

    3) You can't buy the extended part without buying the Standard at full price.

    4) I find the VI player much easier and quicker to use than the old version with the Performance Tool. I hardly ever used to use repetitions, but now I use them all the time. Velocity xFade is great, as is cell xFade. Also, because it is so easy to set-up matrices, it is really flexible to change things quickly. The new VE will be good when the bugs have been ironed out, and will help to make up for some of the deficiencies in Logic.

    5) The new content is fantastic and worth every penny to me. However, I'm not a poor student and it is all a tax write-off anyway.[:D]

    6) I would consider getting Appassionata Strings before the Cube, as you don't have any of these sounds at all.

    7) If you buy the whole Cube, do a bit of arm twisting with Time and Space to get a couple of free dongles.

    I hope that this helps.

  • DG your great, thankyou for your quick replys, So from what im hearing i need to spend another 3,608£ to get the full version of the "Vienna instruments Symphonic Cube"? This is the chart I'm looking at on the web site:

      Standard Extended Full
    Samples: 199,730 593,223 792,953
    DVDs: 10 - 10
    Full Price: *) £ 2,600 £ 3,537 £ 6,137
    Your Price: *) £ 2,600 £ 1,008 £ 3,608

Also does this mean ive just about wasted my money on the old pro edition cube seeings as i wont be able to get discount on the new standard library? If so sh.........t.  I know i must come accross as an idiot but ive got to ask all these questions, see if i cant salvage something from the 2000£ ive already spend on an outdated series of samples..also thanks for your advice on the Appassionata Strings, i was just reading through what they were as your email came in, they sound good, If i was to buy them first and add them to my old cube how would they work? I'm currently using my samples through EXS, and I dont really have an interface like this matrix you get with the VI. I just simply load up the samples, hence my frustration when it comes to getting them to sound realisic (avoid the machine-gun affect).  Would this Appassionata Strings work independantly with an interface? Im sorry to ask all this and if i knew where you were I'd buy you a beer!, DGS

  • The App Strings are like all the VI's - you can buy them independently and they come with the interface. You need a key to go with it. Any library you have in Pro Edition that doesn't require stuff like legato and repetition-you don't really need to buy again and just use it in EXS24 - like say mallets or percussion for example. The full price for these VI libraries, or rather the licences to use them is expensive - there's no point in worrying about that. Prices can drop at a later date though, so the Pro Edition is still good and the sound is the same more or less.

  • as far as Ii can see you've actually found the best and cheapest way of getting what you want.

If you buy the New VI cube cold it costs you £6,137

You have bought Pro Edition Cube for £2,000. it costs you £3,608.00 to upgrade to the full VI Cube net cost £5,608. Over £500 cheaper than buying the VI Cube cold. And on top of that you have got the pro edition samples which you can play and manipulate with a sampler to your hearts content, should you ever want to. Sounds Like a top result to me - and similar to what I did except I think you got pro ed cube cheaper than i did and I am upgrading to the full VI cube gradually.

    Way to go!

But gee how can you possibly afford this if you're a student? - you don't have to answer that - we understand[8-|]

This comment leapt out at me; do you not have the Performance Set as part of your Pro Edition?  One of the things it helps with is avoiding the machine-gun effect through the performance repetition samples.  (I'm presuming that these work in roughly the same way as their counterparts in the Horizon series, which is what I have.)

  • Using the PT for repetitions was/is a PITA. Who has time for that?

    DG

  • Guys thanks again for the comments, with each one I learn something new so keep em coming, as far as affording it yes I am a student in my 3rd year of a music composition degree however when I was offered a car by my parents I decided id rather spend the money on music hardware software and as my parents live out with the armed forces in Germany I get VAT off. so all in all I spent about 14.000£ saving about 6000£ on a new studio running just about everything, its v nice but as you guys know the Vienna series is the last piece in the puzzle for me as I cant afford to hire out full symphony orchestra over and over again. I’m actually basing my dissertation on the Vienna series and whether or not modern day samples can compete and win against live instruments, of course at the moment I think we would all know the answer to that but maybe in time…… HOWEVER, this is the wrong place for this discussion......So again thanks for all your comments. For PaulR “The App Strings are like all the VI's - you can buy them independently and they come with the interface” And….David "Sounds Like a top result to me - and similar to what I did except I think you got pro ed cube cheaper than i did and I am upgrading to the full VI cube gradually” Reading these two comments made me thing of my next question, that is which ones do I get, in order of importance? What do I need to replace? i.e is the price for the whole VI cube a deal or just the price of all the individual components put together? Like you guys said I’m a student and need to start thinking about how to afford 3K over time…. For FCW I do have the performance set and they are extremely good!!!, but take for example the Solo Violin, (VI_perf-leg_f_porta) this is a wonderful sample for pitch and interval changes but when I want to play long notes followed by a quick scale on the same midi part I cant as the sample bends all the notes, which a real player wouldnt do. As far as I understand it the new VI Cube has what’s called a matrix interface where it changes the technique of note played the slower or faster you play on the piano? Or have a got that completely wrong? So yes the performance set is amazing in areas, but for the rest of it (brass and woodwind, and especially the strings) it still sounds a little too false, i.e. the String ensemble when moving chords (strings_sus), if you have any hints or tips to get rid of that or make it sound better please let me know. Thanks. For DG “Using the PT for repetitions was/is a PITA. Who has time for that?” I’m sorry but I don’t know what PITA means, I’m gathering that PT is performance tool? Would love to understand it if you have a second to explain it? Again it all comes in useful. To finish off as you guys seem to have had the time to talk back to me I want to say thanks again and to ask you to keep them coming, maybe someone with a problem like mine will read this and wont have to ask the same stupid question I asked. Sorry to have made this comment so long but I wanted to respond to all of your comments. If my film kicks off properly and my line of work as a composer hits stardom I’ll find you all and buy you a lifetime’s supply of beer! DGS

  • Pain In The A s s. Yes - the repetition technique the old way of doing it was totally cumbersome for me and like Daryl I never used it, which was a bit of a shame because repetition is useful and you don't want the machine gun effect just hammering one sample. Apparently, the VI make this whole repetition thing very easy.-----------------Re: which ones do you get? Well, that's difficult for anyone to answer, but obviously if you're going to write orchestral type things then Strings may be quite important. I would certainly look at the App Strings. It depends a lot on the type of music you write and how you write. A good discipline for anyone, never mind a student is to force oneself to have a very sparse pallet to start from.

  • Very Good advice paulR, I think I will start with the App Strings, then work my way through the string family as that tends to be the one I’m fussiest about. My brass and woodwind stuff isn’t too bad, so thanks for that, that one question though “if I bought it all one by one would I end up spending more when I eventually got the whole package bought”? Please write back when you can. DGS

  • Check the shop and do your sums. Come on man, don't expect us to wipe your a*se for you. [;)]

  • Just hoping you guys might save me some time, seeings as theres alot to choose from...........;).  Am i then assuming i total up the prices for the full version, your price for each one? i.e.

      Standard Extended Full
    Samples: 29,004 76,942 105,946
    DVDs: 4 - 4
    Full Price: *) £ 230 £ 297 £ 527
    Your Price: *) £ 230 £ 127 £ 357

  • When Pro Edition first came out a few years ago now ---the advice to new and potential VSL customers from the VSL staff was to start off small and work your way up. A large amount of orchestral sample libraries can be a bit of a mental overload. So this way of buying the VSL instruments today is better than it was a couple of years ago. ---------So just go to the shop area -or give Time & Space a ring -----tell them what you've got and what you require---and they will tell you the price.

  • full price is what new users will have to spend, your price reflects the discounts on extended libraries for already registered products which relate to the respective collection.

the example shows the pricing for Vienna Instruments solo strings with your discount for an already registered complete orchestral package pro edition

standard libraries of a collection (including the media for all) are not discounted at all - although if you purchase the symphonic cube the price is ~ 5% lower compared to purchasing the 10 included collections seperately..

edit: almost every collection consists of a standard and an extended library
