    I'm in the process of upgrading my main studio, and am thinking of getting mega beast of a PC with 16GB RAM. However, I would like to know how the CPU usage works with VE and machines that have two physical processors. Nuendo has a problem scaling correctly to 8 cores, so for the DAW alone it is currently pointless to get more than a single Quad core. However, if VE is seen as an extra application, and uses CPU separately from that used by the DAW, it still might be worth going for 8 cores. Anyone done any tests? Mac or PC, I don't care ATM.

    i'm considering 8 cores (2 quad cores) generally as not an efficient idea based on the current design of data pipes to the processor - only applications relying mainly on data from the L2 cache would suffer from this architecture - if such a machine is also intended to play streamed samples a 2 proc dual core would give you almost the same power.

    doubling cores from 4 to 8 would in best case give you ~25% more overall performance

    So, I guess that it depends on whether the extra cost to power ratio is acceptable. Possibly not!

    Daryl I would certainly at least wait until early next year and see what the new Macs look like. I am doing this myself so it's not like a 'do as I say not as I do' situation.-------If they turn out to be no good for whatever reason then it's only a couple of months. I'm talking about the Penryn chips of course btw. The Mac I'm using right now is getting decidedly clunky so I may throw it on the skip anyway next year.

    I have considered a Mac, but unfortunately Nuendo runs like a dog on any Mac. If I move to Mac, then everything I use has to work well, and unfortunately it is the exact opposite ATM.
