  • Maximum VE instances

    Hi Paul et al,

This is a repost of a message I posted a few days ago  Sometimes my questions are a bit obscure, but this one seems of such obvious general interest that I figured I'd give it another try in its own subject heading (I'm taking it off the other thread):

    1. Have you guys had the chance to fully load a Mac Pro?  I have a dual quad-core Mac Pro.  Let's say I had 16 GB of Ram (I only have 9, as it happens).  At 2.5 GB per VE, that would give me up to 6 VE instances, with 1 GB left over for the computer to actually... be a computer.  If I were to fully load all that (which I realize would take quite a bit of time), would the computer be able to handle that many VIs?  If not, do you guys yet know the practical limits?

    2. Any reason why each VE addresses 2.5 GB, as opposed to the 3.4 GB? I'm not complaining - just curious.

    Thanks,

    Peter

  • Hello Peter,

everybody believes that his questions are the ones of obvious general interest [:)]

    1) Your calculation is right, and that also works. Of course it depends on how many articulations you want for each VI. 40 VI´s inside different Vienna Ensemble are no problem on a Mac Pro.

    2) The application Vienna Ensemble takes a little RAM too. I´m sure this will be optimized in future updates. What I don´t understand is that you´re talking about 3.4 GB - the limit is at about 2.8-3GB, also with the Vienna Instruments.

Oh, and of course we are interested in your test results as well!

    Best,

    Paul

Paul, if Leopard really is a 64bit OS, then shouldn't a 32bit app be able to use up to 4GB RAM?

    1. Fair enough on all counts!  Also explains why I was never able to reach 3.4 GB with VI.  I was extrapolating from the 3.5 GB theoretical limit, plus I thought I had read of people reaching 3.4.  But maybe not.  I got 2.5 GB from one of your posts:

<<on a dedicated sample computer (as slaves=>no sequencer) you can simply copy the "Vienna Ensemble" application and open as many as you like - each will be able to adress 2.5 GB...   Best, Paul >>

Is the limit 2.5 instead of 2.8 to 3.0 because VE takes more overhead?

    2. I realize that the maximum number of instances depends on the number of articulations, also that 40 VIs are fine on a Mac Pro.  Just wondered if you guys had yet had the chance to fully load the RAM on a 16 GB Mac Pro with VE in some way, and how the Mac behaves when you do.

    3. I'll be happy to share whatever test results I get.  But they won't be for a system that has 16 GB of RAM.[:)]

    Thanks,

    Peter
