  4. Is there any point in having a huge amount of RAM on a Mac ?

    There are a few ifs and buts, but if Leopard is truly 64bit, and if/when VE is 64bit, then you should be able to fill up all your RAM. However, make sure that you have enough hard drives; I wouldn't want to be streaming a whole orchestra from one drive. Also, wouldn't you be better off with a new Mac rather than one of the legacy models?

    There are ways of running multiple instances of Vienna Ensemble in standalone mode, which means you can theoretically use as much RAM as you have available.

    Also, you can now max out Vienna Ensemble (2.5GB), and then max out Vienna Instruments (another 2.5GB) just by using the respective plugins within Logic, as each uses a different standalone server application.  This already gives you access to 5GB of Vienna samples (in theory), plus whatever else you want to load into other plugins within Logic, without going the standalone route.  You could then add standalone Vienna Ensembles or Vienna INStruments to that combination to take you wherever your system will allow.

    Mac Pro ! - thats what I meant ( it does get confusing ) Thanks for the info Jules ! - So I guess 8 x core would be best then ?

    I have an 8-core and it flies, even though Logic 7 only uses 4 cores.  Whether it's really necessary unless you're using massive plugin counts is debatable, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have the extra CPU overhead.

    Obvioulsy the number of cores will have no direct bearing on how much RAM you can use with VI/VE.

    DG,

    Are there plans and timing as to when the Vienna Instrument (OSX 10.5) will be 64-bit capable and access all the RAM available on a Mac Pro 16 GB?  Some of us may prefer to not use Ensemble and stay and mix within the Logic Environment.  Please advise.

    I'm sorry, but I have inside information. However, do remember that Leopard has only just been released, and the last thing that anyone wants is untested software.

    Actually that leads to a very good question. As VE runs "outside" of the DAW, does it use another chunk of CPU? See where I'm going with this? You see, if Logic only uses 4 cores, then will VE use the other 4? How does it work?

    Understand DG, I was just hoping that the Company was not going to bank all their efforts on Ensemble and leaving the individual player only  capable of accessing the 3GB limit.  Can you at least verify that they are or not going to make enhancements to the individual instrument?

    I'm struggling with the 4-core statement. I'm currently using Logic 8 on a Mac Pro 8-core 16GB.  My system is using all eight cores when I have the Vienna Instrument Loaded........  I also have between 8-12 Altiverbs loaded at any given time......
