So now that we have some new exciting options for increasing our VI use on single computer, I wanted to try to get a better understanding of how RAM and virtual memory are used by VI and VE.
At the bottom of this post is an image of my Activity Monitor, set to display "active processes." I have one instance of VE operating as a plug-in in DP, and one standalone instance of VE. The plug-in is the more fully loaded instance. Note that the plug-in VE's use of "Real Memory" is given as close to 17 million terabytes. As I'm reasonably sure I don't have THAT much RAM... what's going on? The real usage is 3.09 GB, as shown in Virtual Memory. But don't the first few msecs of each sample reside in RAM, not virtual memory?
The other instance of VE, the standalone, shows real memory as 1.49 GB and virtual as 1.96 GB. Not sure which represents the actual usage.
Can someone clarify this? (BTW I've never tried inserting an image in a post before, so if there's no image... I failed.
Thanks,
Peter
