    Paul, this is good news, and makes the FXT implementation even more important, as it will be necessary to run both in tandem for a while.

    Cool, that's what I was worried about. I'll give it a shot tomorrow then!

    Hi Paul,

    I'm a little confused about what the VE actually is, as compared to the VI player.  Is the VE only for a user who's running VI's on a separate mac?

    Think of the VE as a mixing console first .. that you can fit the VI's into. This means you can run the VI's outside f your sequencer thus taking the RAM strain off the sequencer. The VI player is more akin to the EXS player.

    Hmmm... does that mean that if I open it up in Logic as an AU, it doesn't take RAM away from Logic?  Since I work with VI's as individual tracks in Logic, I'm trying to figure out exactly how this would be different (i.e. beneficial) for me....

    Well yeah .. of course it does. But so do the VI's if you're using them as a plugin. The point is that you can use the VE within Logic if you want to. Eventually when 64 bit comes in proper .. and logic 8 is the big player .. you'll be able to use as much system RAM as you want in Logic. But for now you can load things in Logic .. and also have more instruments externally. ..... For instance, I have 8 gig of RAM. But Logic can only use 3.7 gigs. So if I load Logic full of VI's or VE's .. and then also use the VE externally .. I can have more instruments.

    So here's the other question, because I've never used anything externally... how does one use VE outside of Logic?  The concept sounds great, but  I've never had to do that before.  Is it set up in the Environment window somehow as an instrument?

    Kerry,

    the Vienna Ensemble works as a seperate application, even when used as a plugin (like the Vienna Instruments).

    This way you can fill up your RAM with, e.g., EXS24 samples (max. 2.8 - 3GB), then add the same amount for the Vienna Ensemble and do the same with Vienna Instruments, if you want.

    That´s the most efficient way to use RAM on 1 Mac.

    Thanks Paul and heteroyn -- that makes it all make sense. And now I see why everyone is so psyched about it! It really opens up the possibility for a much larger orchestra, even on 1 mac. Kerry

    It is a cool thing. Your last question was how does one get logic to use anything in the External VE. That's to do with the virtual midi ports. I haven't tried it myself yet .. but I think the idea is that you set up as many Ports as you like .. upto 8. And each of those can use 16 midi channels. So lets say you have port 1 is your strings .... port 2 is your woodwinds .. etc .. and each of those ports can have upto 16 seperate instruments. .... Though I'm sure one can do much more with it .. but this is my understanding of it.

    That sounds like one of those things that's confusing in concept, but easier to figure out when it's right in front of me & I'm trying to make it work!
