VI crashing Logic 8 after several instances with extra RAM
I am on a Mac Pro 8 core with 13 GB of RAM and running Logic 8. I am building my own template of mostly Vienna Instruments Special Edition, with a little bit of the EWQLSO in 2 instances of Kontakt 2. I am at a point where if I load one more patch in my current instance of VI, Logic freezes up and crashes, even though it shows that I have at least 7 GB of RAM free. I have no idea what the problem is? Is there a limit to the amount I can load? Is it a CPU issue? I don't know enought to figure this out. HELP!

Hi Jason,
I too have a Mac Pro 8-core with 16GB of RAM running Logic 8. I purchased the machine so that in time, once the new operating system Leppard is released (64-bit version) so that additional RAM can be addressed and VI updates their Instrument to recognize the additional RAM, I could work without having to release samples out of RAM. This in my opinion, will be a great time saver and workflow improvement.
Until then, we are limited to approx 4GB of RAM. I understand that some of the users are obtaining additional by using the VI samples (Horizon, earlier libraries, etc.) along with KONTAKT or EXS of which both uses direct disc access thereby minimizing the amount of samples in RAM. I also understand that you could also load one stand-alone and access it through a MIDI link.
Currently I have found that VI is showing 14,016 GB available when I start a new project with just one instance. I can load instruments until that number reaches 8,858 MB before the machine locks-up and requires a re-boot. The difference is approx 4GB.
Hope this sheds some light on the current sitituation.

By the way Jason, the one major plus I see right now is that I am currently working on a project with 65 VI instances loaded, at times most are playing and the average CPU's (8) are at approx 40%. I also have several reverbs and effects loaded. I'm very pleased with the system performance that I'm obtaining. Hopefully soon, VI and Apple will get beyond this anoying memory constraint and allow us to work in a single Logic 8 environment, which I must say, is a major improvement over the previous version and other sequencers. I'm also hoping that VI will find a way to get their plug-in to work like the native Apple plug-ins where you only need to press a single button to bring up the player within Logic 8.
