  • VSL Special Edition Extended Question / Feedback.

    Hi,

I'm interested in purchasing the "Special Edition Extended" VSL VI, it seems to have quite a bit of great sounding orchestral instruments, at an attractive price.

The only concern I have is the shorter articulation strings, which would hopefully complement the Appassionata Strings included in the extended version.

The current audio demos do not seem to demonstrate how the shorter strings that are included in this library sound, (i.e. when writing fast staccato string phrases), since most of the demos are on the slow tempo, classical/romantic side.

Any comments or feedback from users would be helpful, or if there are any audio demos of the shorter articulation strings that are included in this library that I can listen to would be very helpful in making my decision to go ahead with it.

    Thanks.

  • You could also listen to a few demos using Opus 1/2, as the VSE shouldn't differ too much in that region. Though I don't know which velocity layers were skipped for the VSE strings (usually 4 in Opus vs. 3 in VSE).

    All the best,
    PolarBear

  • There are only a few demos showing the fast rep. articulations in Opus 2, personally I'm not very impressed by the demos.

I think that the best way to evaluate VSL special edition strings (the short articulations) would be to hear some audio demo/s using the strings from this library, rather than the older Opus libraries.

So, far I don't think any demos exist that demonstrate the short string articulations of the Special Edition Ext.

I will not be purchasing this library until I can be sure that the shorter articulation strings are very good sounding, hence, I feel that additional audio demos are needed for VSL's Special Edition.

    Thanks.

  • Actually I just thought of short strings in general, a bit more than only fast reps, also the staccatos and marcatos already included in Opus 1. I can imagine the programming of them in VSE might be a bit different, but that won't make them "sound" like another library. Or do you hear a major difference between the Pro Edition or VI Strings I + II and the Opus strings? Soundwise? Anyway, just thought I might give you some hint there may be more demos to listen to whilst awaiting the desired demos.

    All the best,
    PolarBear

  • Hi PolarBear, and Thank You for some additional feedback regarding the short string articulations of VSE.

This is a tricky area of evaluating libraries, the most direct, and accurate way to evaluate the VSE short string articulations is simply.... "To Hear Them !"

Either exposed alone, or used in a musical composition.

Since other libraries might have additional articulations, which are not included in VSE strings, or the strings might not be exactly the same due to less velocity layers, or any other factors that are realted to the short strings articulations of VSE.

I have to say that, additional VSE demos are needed to further evaluate this detail.

    Thanks.
