  • Quick and Dirty questions

    1. Should I max out the ram in my multi G5 set up, or would 6 gig in each G5 be enough? ( I have one Quad 2.5 which is my Sequencer, one dual 2.5, and 2 Dual 2.0s, one Running Pro Tools HD3 as my mix computer.

    2. Do faster drives with a bigger cache help to reduce cpu usage, or do they just help with voice count and other issues?

    3. Should I just bag my 2 PCs with gigastudio 3 and run Kontakt and VI on 2 more G5s? ( I have vowed to not have more than 6 computers in my iso closet! )

    4. Should I break my vow?

  • Livitican, at the current state of affairs i'd say 6 GB per G5 is a good choice (unless you like to setup like SvK combining kontakt with VI or use plogue with some advanced routing)

faster drives would of course allow higher voice count, akthough large caches don't affect something because of the nature of sample streaming (NCQ on the other hand _does_) - CPU is almost not involved here.

given your PCs have 2-4 GB RAM i'd look at it as a usable configuration, for GS as well as for kontakt and VIs too (just keep in mind some memory tweaks used for GS are sometimes contraproductive for the VI-engine)

  • Thanks for the reply cm. what would be the best host for VI on my PCs?

  • hmm, i think this is more a question of taste than of good or bad ... maybe paul can comment on this, because he checked out all host software he could get his hands on ....

  • For the PC, I use Cubase SX 3 which runs the Vienna Instrument's great. No problems. The only other popular host that would work would be Sonar but I haven't personally tried that.

  • If you are looking for a VST host on PC, then you should try Forte. There is a demo available, so it won't cost you anything to test it out. V-Stack works, but it is not LAA and some users also find that they need to close and open it again after 12 hours of use. I use Chainer (for various irrelevant reasons) but this only has 10 channels, so if you need more then you would have to go through the hassle of opening 2 instances.
