  • Hard drive for Opus 1

I've established that on my current PC I do not have SATA support and only have IDE drives. I am going to upgrade my RAM to 2GB (2x1GB) but I need a new hard drive for my samples.

To this end, can anyone recommend a good PATA IDE hard drive. I'll only be loading Opus 1 and Opus 2 onto it so it doesn't need to have a humungous capacity, but I obviously want a drive that can load samples quickly.

    Thanks

  • If it helps at all, my PC is a Dell Dimension 4600 (desktop) and I currently have a 55Gb hard drive.

  • Actually I'd say everything but Hitachi/IBM (out of my personal experience, also they only have 1 year warranty in Germany, while others have 2 or 3) should be fine as long as you're getting a 7200rpm drive, and perhaps putting that on the secondary master or slave (your system drive is on primary master). Watch the jumper settings when connecting to the mainboard in any case, some drives also have a "cable select" option where you usually have to care less.

About size: You'll need the space one day, that's why I usually buy the drive with the best GB/$ ratio. That should be a 160-250GB these days. Calculate at least 20% headroom to the amount of data you're supposing to put on it.

    All the best,

  • Thanks (again) Polar Bear! You've been a great help on these forums. I think I'm about ready to get everything I need to start making music now!

I'll let you know how I get on!
