  • MIDI playback vs. live playing

Could you please advise if it is possible to use VI for playing back an existing MIDI file while preserving all of VI's features as opposed to playing live into the program?

If yes, is it possible to use tricks in MIDI editing to achieve desired performance of VI? E.g. when working with Performance Tool one could make two notes overlap to result in a slight portamento slur.

    Thank you,
    Dmitry.

  • Hello Dmitry,

your question is a bit unspecific to be able to give you a straightforward answer ... but I'll try anyway [[;)]]

If you open a Midi file with a sequencer which can run VST/AU instruments, you can assign a VI instance to every track, set up your instruments, and play back the whole piece. Saving that sequencer piece will also keep all your VI settings.

For live performance, you can use the stand-alone VI with your keyboard port connected directly, or again use the VST/AU through the sequencer, and record the performance at the same time - but then you need a good sound card with little latency to get satisfying results.

As for tricks, I can't really say yet but I'm sure we'll find out in time. With what kind of articulation do you get that portamento slur?

    Cheers, and greetings to Moskva

  • Hi David,

Thank you for your reply! I am only entering the sampling world, that is why my queries are general.

To answer your question, the portamento wisdom comes from Craig Stuart Garfinkle at www.ilio.com/features/tips/tips_vsl2.html. His advice targets beginners, but I wish VSL posted more basics for those who are yet to choose which bandwagon to climb on: VSL, Synful, etc.

Once again, thank you very much, David, you did help. Now to the video tutorials (I wish somebody told me what the total size of those files is).

Good night, and my regards to the beautiful Vienna,
    Dmitry.

  • You're welcome, Dmitry!

I'm going to have a look at Craig's site too ...

    Cheers,
    d.
