    Hello,

    I'm a little confused by the new V.I. products vs Horizon, and was hoping for some clarification. Besides the amazing new V.I. sample player, what are the major differences between the Standard V.I. Chamber Strings and the Horizon Chamber Strings?

    Obviously its a little hard to judge between the two this early on as the V.I. version is not even out yet, but given that there is a great deal going on for all horizon products, I'd like to know which to go for. Thus I'm hoping to find out the differences between the two sets, as they are both comparable in price.

    You could go to the chamber strings product page and compare the articulation lists for Horizon and VI Standard.

    In a nutshell - the Extended VI has more samples and other possibilities.

    If you go to the Chamber Strings page in the webshop and click on "Articulations" you can see what was added. "Existing content" is the content you can find in the Horizon series Chamber Strings, and "New Content" will be found in Standard & Extended Library of Chamber Strings. To check what's in Standard and Extended you could click the correspondive button "Std/Ext Library" on the same page. The Horizon series only makes use of the Performance Tool, but you have access to the sample pool, the VI give you all the fancy new possibilities, but you can't access the samples anymore. If you have Horizon Chamber Strings (or buy it now in the sale) you'll get a discount on the Extended Library part - check the discount calculator for more details.

    If you buy now Horizon CS at Holiday Price (530 euro), upgrading to VI CS will cost you 525 euro: 530 + 525 = 1.055 euro.

    VI CS costs 1.090 euro.

    The conclusion is that buying now Horizon CS and upgrading to VI CS in 2006, you save 45 euro.

    So I guess that the best option would be to buy Horizon, as the extended content basically "free" if you plan on upgrading to the complete V.I. CS, correct? This would be the obvious solution for most people, however for someone like me, a poor college student who only has $600 extra to spend this year, its a bit harder to decide. Should I jump into new technology, skipping the Horizon series all together and go with the standard V.I. and bite the bullet in a few years and upgrade at full cost, or will I be happy with the Horizon chamber strings and simply wait to upgrade as needed (which wont be until much later, as I would probably upgrade other areas of my orchestral samples before buying chamber strings again)

    Can you see my dilemma? If I dont jump on the new technology now, I probably wont be able to for years down the road. However, if I am already using Opus 1 & 2 through EXS in Logic, would having V.I. for just chamber strings really make composition that much easier?

    What would you guys do in my situation? My head hurts [:D]

    Whats funny is that with all other Horizon products (Solo Strings, Epic Horns, etc) there is enough of a price difference to justify buying the Horizon series, as they are normally much cheeper then the standard V.I. equivalent. However in the case of chamber strings, they are very close to the same price, making the decision even harder to make!

    Dont know why I needed to po it out, but its interesting, no? [:P]

    Just buy the VI Standard ... and then you can try out the extended bits for free for a month, and buy them if you think you need them.

    since you are a VSL user already, you know the current workflow.
    I'd examine the articulation lists of Horizon and the VI Standard for the Chamber Strings and go the way that let's you get the best results now, talking about your needs for music and samples.
    If you feel that the VI Standard is sufficient for now, then getting the new generation looks appropriate.
