  • Panning and mixing

    Hmm. One thing that always bothers my musical works is a slight phasing that seems to happen. I know it's not my speakers cos when I pplay other things through it they're okay.

    You can always telling slight phasing if you place either side of your head at a right angle to the speakers and move around, there's a perseived 'sweep' going on as you go between and up and down.

    So what can I do about this. In terms of mixing I usually try to do it right. Panning the Strings section from L35 to R35, and the other instruments accordingly. So I think my panning is okay.

    But also ... how the hell do I create the impression of depth. I see the Beat Kaufmann uses a surround pan to put the woodwinds et al into a mono position thus creating the 'depth' feel. But how dod I do that. All my pieces just seem to close to the speakers. All I can do is put a heavy verb on it .. which people tend to moan about. Simply lessening the volume doesn't do it either, cos that's not changing percieved depth.

    I'm using logic, so what can I do. Experimenting is one thing .. but I need to get it right. Can anyone suggest depth measures that I can take .. and perhaps a good book on mixing and panning orchestra.

  • For depth, create two or three sections (e.g. strings without double basses / woods, double basses / brass, percussion) that you feed with different dry/wet ratios.

    But the pieces I have heard from you have plenty of verb - the more overall verb you apply, the more difficult it gets to get depth with this method. So for a start try to do the front without, the middle with slight, and the back with more reverb. Just use as much as needed but not more to percieve depth differences. Now apply an fourth overall reverb to create the circumventing space.

    That's my approach on this, using SIR atm with some free impulses - it would be even better if you had e.g. three native recorded impulses for the distance.

    I see. Didn't really think of that. Using differing reverbs for differnt sections ... then after I could apply an overall small verb just to keep it all airy. I've of course got space designer. Not that I really know how to use it yet.
