    Hello,

    I am working on an orchestral piece and am wondering when everyone pans their tracks. Most tutorials and books suggest to render all the midi tracks, centered in stereo, and then pan the audio in the sequencer after you are done composing. When composing, however, keeping everything centered doesn't sound very good, so I like to pan MIDI tracks, but I am also experiencing a few problems.

    First, when I use Gigapulse on an instrument panned to the far left, I still hear the reverb in full stereo (so the instrument initially sounds like it's coming from the left, and then the decay and reverb sounds like it's centered). Second, I can only set the "width" of a channel in the Gigastudio inputs if I use Gigapulse post-fader, instead of pre-fader as seems recommended, and which appears to produce a better sound.

    Any suggestions or comments appreciated!

    The problem with midi is that if you put too many midi commands (Velocity changes, panning, pitch etc) it gets confused. I've experienced lots of problems with computer based midi mixing. A better way is to mix within you synth or sampler. I have a Roland XP-30 and a Korg Triton in addition to my VSL. And I usually pan the synth instruments within the synth itself thus cutting down on computer confusion.

    It may be the same with what your using. Just a thought

    MIDI panning is simply adjusting the volume of the two stereo channels of the sample, so you'll loose some stereo information when using that. But that's ok for quick mixes, and saves processing power. For final mixdown's I'd go the audio route.

    Thanks gentlemen! PolarBear, those links are exactly what I am talking about... it doesn't appear there is a solution within Gigastudio at this point.

    I assume I should keep everything centered at full width, and then take the individual audio tracks back into the sequencer and apply panning and width control. Thanks!
