  • Cubase VSL novice nightmare

OK, I'm a thicky-doughnut. Even the "...for Dummies" series leaves me floundering in unfathomably frustrating f***ing futility. (Please interpret the alliteration as a fortissimissimissimo cry for help...)

    I use a PC (XP) & Cubase SX3 + I just bought Giga Studio 3 & VSL.
Having loaded all the sounds into the VST folder, what do I do from Cubase in order to access them?

Please forgive my simple question, but I'm thwarted by at least one technical term on every 'help' page I read. I don't suppose someone could come to my rescue and spell out for me what in tarn-bloody-nation I'm not doing right?

Thanks a lot, and oh - this being my first post - HELLO EVERYBODY!

  • Hi Fructose!

For one thing, if you're using Giga as a VST in Cubase, it sounds like you're missing the all important VST adaptor... You can find it here......

    http://www.fx-max.com

Rewire works better, though, only if you're computer is over a P4 3.4 Gig, with 1.5 meg of ram.

  • I don't use cubase, but I think its simplest connection to gigastudio is similar to sonar's: you start gigastudio, then configure cubase as the sequencer WITHIN GIGASTUDIO. Then start cubase with the sequencer button. When cubase starts, you may have to set some properties to get the gigastudio midi ports visible; then, set up midi tracks to play the instruments in gigastudio driven by cubase. This is in the manual, i think, though can't find mine at the moment to make sure.

Would NOT recommend adding the complexity of fx-max or even rewire on top before you've mastered the simpler ways of doing things!

In the northernsounds forums, gigastudio section, there are several regulars who use cubase I believe -- might be worth asking there too, or searching the forum with the search tool.

  • gugliel is right.

Looking forward to hearing if your pc can run both Giga and Cubase simultaneously - I run Giga/VSL on a separate PC from my cubase pc...

One more vote to keep things simple first, try to run Cubase and Giga without use of ReWire or fx-max's tools.

I'm not using Cubase, but so far the process has been the same as it seems: You just need to start Cubase as seqeuencer out of Giga (that ensures the MIDI ports are only listening to what your sequencer sends out if a keyboard is connected) and configure the Nemesys Midi Out ports in your sequencer as send outs. If you are trying to run performance instruments things get a bit more complicated but not that much >< . There's also a sticky topic in the Giga Section about running Giga and sequencer on 1 computer. If your problem persists I'd start with Giga in standalone mode (without running the sequencer), fire up some samples in there and see if anything hits my speakers when pressing a key on the keyboard. If that works I'd take a step further and go to the sequencer and see if a midi-file plays back correctly (i.e. triggers some sounds that are loaded in Giga). If that's ok the last option is trying to play your keyboard in sequencer with some sounds loaded in Giga.

jorgen, I run Giga alongside Sonar on one computer without any problems. I don't think you will run into problems with Cubase either.

    Hope this helps,

  • Hi Polar

Thanks - I didn't dare trying to run GIGA/VSL on 1 pc and bought a separate pc for GIGA/VSL and other samples; before purchasing VSL I tried QL's Siæver edition and couldn't run too many MIDI tracks before it was stuck...

    Don't know about kontakt.
