  • Dividing the data among computers?

How do you have VSL spread out?

I have two GS computers in addition to my sequencer. I plan to be loading the 1st ed. package this weekend. Should I split the install between the GS computers, or just install the complete data on both? HDD space is not a concern, since I have 200g data drives on both GS comps.

    Thanks

  • If you have the space I'd install everything on both, and if you are doing some templates or loading instruments, trying to stay with two sections on each until you run out of memory or power on one, and now are using the advantage of having it installed on both computers. This way you can easily see how everything is organized and have quick access to everything plus having the full power as an option where needed. It's common to split the for major sections to different computers.

    Hope this helps,

  • I try to divide things amongst computers by section - thus allowing me to take advantage of the multiple CPUs to make more effective real time use of convolution reverb.

  • That helps alot, thanks!

  • I have everything installed on each of three computers, just to save shuffling things around all the time. Then I distribute the load accross them so that they are working about equally. Everything stays in midi as long as possible so when I speak of load, I'm thinking notes and controller data. Since it isn't uncommon to see a harp gliss at the end of a phrase along with timpani and cymbal rolls, etc., I keep those instruments on separate computers so things don't jumble up. My personal setup is much more complicated than that, and somewhat inefficient because I like to use a template with everything up and running all at once. You and others may disagree, and quite validly. It just comes down to what you're comfortable with and how you want to work. If this is the first time you'll be using VSL, just work with it a bit, and then plan to change your setup to accomodate the things you learn along the way. It's a fun journey.

  • I'm sure things will change as I get acustomed to VSL, but I don't look forward to having to move all those samples around. So, I think I'll just put everything on both and get that part out of the way. [:)]

  • Well, that wasn't bad. I managed to get everything installed on both computers in just over six hours.
