  • More beginners questions

I have been reading around these forums and listening to the demos and am in awe of the sound that can be acheived with Opus 1. I am a music student, 1 year from graduation and am seriously considering using the remainder of my loan to buy Opus 1.

I'm completely new to the "audio" side of computer composition but have been composing using MIDI (I currently have Home Studio 2002 & Silbelius 3 on my PC) for a long time.

From reading around this forum it seems I need to buy Gigastudio, perhaps get a new soundcard (currently working with SB Audigy), up my RAM to 1BG, and get some more HD space. As I'm sure you know, this will be a substantial investment.

What I was wondering was, since I will not be making these purchases for a while, what can I do in the meantime to improve my skills and gain more knowledge on the technical side? It seems I could just jump in at the deep end and buy all this gear, but because I'm really not sure as to what I'm doing, I don't think this would be wise.

How much technical skill does it take to get to grips with all of this and how long did it take you guys to learn/teach yourself how to work it all?

    Thanks
    from a nervous newbie [:D]

  • I would suggest getting Gigastudio 3.0 orchestra edition. It has basic sounds from VSL and will you give you a good start. A good yet, less expensive soundcard would be from Delta: audiophile 2496. Zzounds can sell these items at a good discount. If you can get these items into your computer, you'll be in the right direction. Upgrade your RAM later.

  • Hm. Get GPO. Start with that right now (on your current system) to learn a few things. Upgrade all other things later - your hardware, GS3, Opus 1, sequencer, effects... Oh and make sure the Garritan COOP still exists with the new pricing, I can't find it on the website anymore (contact cm, Paul or Martin).
