  • Horizon Solo Strings - sounds straight out of the box?

    Alrite,

first i would like to say congrats to all involved in this project, great work!

i was massively impressed by the horizon solo strings demos but before i purcase such a product, i would like to know what tricks are used to make these demos sound SOOOOOO real?

    or

is the sound "straight out of the box" so to speak

please excuse my ignorance on this topic

    thank you

    Dave

  • I have the full pro package and several Horizons series sets, and the solo strings are by far my favorite. The forte cello with portamento mapped to the modwheel is incredible.

  • i have to agree ... the solo strings that are there are beautiful..

    would love some more [[;)]]

  • I can remember the happy day when I got my box from Fed Ex....

to get good results, listen to a lot of string quartets and study those scores. Most of the material you need is there. Haromics are still missing.

The Art files for Gigastudio really helped for the short notes. I was able to get access to the short notes with the up and down bows in one patch.

The legato tool and patches will help improve realism. In other words, use those those type of patches with the multi-samples.

A good program for reverb after you record your piece will help too.

    Hi Dave
I talk about the articulation-demos. There are no tricks:
    No EQs [[[[:|]]]]
    No Compressors [[[[:|]]]]
No Chorus, Flanger, no other effects [[[[:|]]]]

But: Samplitudes Convolution-Reverb with "Concert Arena 2,8s"

    1. No effects > that's the trick for a real sound (with VSL).
    2. ...and a big choice of different samples.

    And now buy! [[;)]]
    bye bye

  • i personally prefer ewqlsop strings they are much much more real sounding than vsl.

  • De gustibus non est disputandum...

  • Dave - our Library is meant to be used like a classical multi-track recording. Each instrument is as pristine as possible, but you are in the position to decide what to put where. You have the choice to select the room your virtual players will sit in, and their spatial relation to each other. - So: What you hear most of the time when listening to our demos is the pure sound, with the occasional EQ, some thoughtful panning, and of course the added reflections and reverb that fit to the task. This is very much the work of a conductor who chooses the perfect venue and has a certain vision of "his" sound.

Technically, there are many discussions in our Mixing and PostPro-forum that could give you an idea of the different styles of working, while the Orchestration-forum deals mostly with the aspects of proper arrangements.

    HTH!

    ****

Paw - you are kindly invited to share your opinions and to make a point, but please be aware that you will be asked to deliver, too ;-] .... so: where is _your_ production with the "so much more real" virtual violin solos? I have yet to hear one ... [+o(]

  • Didn't that sentence go like that:

De gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum.

    Cheers!

  • Dietz,

I would be happy to post an effective string arrangement demo on here,if you can provide a link and some webspace to do so.

More then one VSL-musician is waiting for such a midifile [:D]
I'm anxious for this file too.
    Have also a look here:
    http://community.vsl.co.at/viewtopic.php?t=4775
I've made two posts. There you have also the possibility to download a midifile.

But I'm really not sure whether such a midifile helps or rattle you. [*-)]:

    All the best
