  • VSL on a MAC?

Currently I'm running Pro Tools on a Mac, and VSL on a PC dedicated to Giga. While this is probably the best way to go right now, I'm wondering what options I would have if I wanted to replace the PC with a new Mac.

Is there any way VSL could run in standalone mode on the 2nd Mac, or is there a simple app that would load VSL and act as GIGA does??

    Thanks
    Tom

  • Hi Tom,

We are just about to release the standalone version of the Performance Tool for the Mac platform and the entire Horizon Series is already available in Kontakt and HALion format.

On the other hand, there is also the option to have Logic running on a separate Mac and sync it to ProTools (oh, but you asked for a simple app... [[;)]] ). That way you would be able to run all our libraries from a dedicated "VSL-Mac". I have no real-life experience with this kind of setup though, just tried it once for testing purposes...

Marnix, thanks. I have all the Pro Edition libraries, so I suppose using Logic on a Mac would be best....I'm not sure how I would sequence on the Pro Tools Mac, and then send MIDI to one of the channels on the LOGIC Mac...sounds involved, but it would be worth it if it worked....that would mean then, that I'd have to use VSL in the Logic EX sampler, right?

    Thanks
    Tom

so can i use this with DP?

  • Hi Craig!

Yes, the Standalone Performance Tool also works with DP! I´m just about to write the Setup Guide and re-check every step.

    Finally!

    Best wishes, Paul

  • Very Cool!!

    Thanks Paul

  • Hi Craig,

To avoid any misunderstanding I´d like to add and point out that as of today, we can certify that the standalone Performance Tool for Mac works with MOTUs Digital Performer, but only the Horizon Series is available for Kontakt and HALion!

  • So I just bought VSL pro this week. i haven't opened the boxes yet. i run DP on a dual 1 gig quicksilver and was about to load VSL (EXS version) on my new dual 2.5 G5 (8 gigs ram) using Logic. That's right 8 gigs [:)]

Does this mean that I can avoid using Logic altogether and use DP on the second mac?

Or what are my options now? i also own kontakt and was going to give that a shot on the G5 since I hate Logic.

Can I do everything on the G5 under DP and forget about the 2 mac thing?

Times are a changing and I feel myself becoming a 1st class citizen again. VSL on DP that's a cool thought.

Let me know before I open the boxes

  • Marnix,
Please explain in detail because I just got contradictory info from christian via email just a few days ago.

Are you saying that I could import VSL pro edition into kontakt and use the upcoming Kontakt performance tool?

    thanks!

  • Hello,

Does anybody have tried Horizon libraries (new programs from VSL for Kontakt) on Mac ?

I did and have some problems to load samples. It seems that Kontakt is unable to find the good path...

Of course I have converted the programs to the good format, and samples are in wav.

    If somebody could help...

    Thanks in advance.
    Did.

  • Hi Ed,

the Pro Edition is NOT customized for Kontakt or HALion, all Horizon Series products are customized. As soon as you register, you simply download the corresponding programs.

And the customization IS important in order to make all programs work (and sound) fine. This process takes quite a while.

    Hi Ron,

which product do you have? All Horizon Series products will work fine with HALion/Kontakt and DP.

    Hi Did,

which samples did you convert in the "good format". All wav´s are included on your DVD. Please have a look in the folder "EXS", you´ll find all samples there. Kontakt searches whole volumes (not folders), so it is useful to store your Horizon Series samples on a "smaller" harddisc.

    Hope this helps, Paul

  • hey paul. I have VSL pro edition EXS version that i originally bought thinking that i would load it into the G5 in logic EXS (I haven't opened the boxes yet) I have been using SAM brass this way quite succesfully triggering from my main mac quicksilver in DP.

i also have Kontakt that i haven't opened yet either so i don't know how it works yet. i guess i am just looking at options on the 2nd mac. which works better logic or kontakt.....etc....

DP on quicksilver dual gig ---------------------- G5 running Logic or Kontakt VSL pro edition (EXS)

would it be possible to convert my VSL library to Kontakt and use Kontakt with the OSX tool? Is it worth the trouble?
    au secours! help!

  • Hi Ron,

I strongly suggest to use your Pro Edition with EXS24, as it was designed for it.

Now go on, open your parcels. Merry Christmas!

    Best wishes, Paul

  • Homebilly,

Please contact me when you are up and running. I would like to ask you a few performance questions about your setup, specifically the RAMifications (pun intended) or the amount of RAM you have in there.

    Thanks!

  • evan, will do. it'lll probably all happpen about the beginning of the year. It's a little crazy these days. i will keep you posted.

    Answer from Technical support :

"Also, we are currently working on an update which will make the
loading procedure of Kontakt patches much easier and quicker. The
updates will be hopefully available for download
    from the User Area
of our website around the end of this week!"

Perhaps it could help somebody else...
