    Hi all,

Here's a new composition by me. Trying to make a little action-cue which next to action also consists of atonal/disonant stuff I do often:

    Tell me what ya think?

    Take care,
    -Sid.

  • Terrific!!

I really like the action parts of this cue. The brass is tremendous. My only concern is the woodwinds (especially flute) sound a tiny bit stiff and synthy to my hears in the atonal sections. Are you using VSL for woodwinds?

I'm quite sure it won't be too long before we see your name up in lights!

    Keep composing and posting.

    Thanks,
    Jay

  • Thanks Jay,

I've been using Westgate piccolo in this one. I think it sounds quite well though as sample.

    Take care,
    -Sid.

  • The middle section would get you fired for whatever project this would be for. i suggest removing the silly woodwind section and just keep it to the epic. Sorry if in 10 to 20 years you become famous and desired for doing this kind of thing, but for now, I go on record saying it has no place in the score that you setup prior to it. Either that or add some strings, or orchestrate it. It's unacceptable in it's current state.

The action sections are phenomenal however. The best I've heard yet from anyone using VSL. So great job.

Just try to put on your Producer hat for a moment and notice how there is no film where the woodwind stuff you wrote would fit with the epic stuff you wrote. It's disparate and needs cutting or revision.

    With humbled respect,
    Evan Evans

  • I agree with Evan on this - the woodwinds are first of all bad sounding in themselves - they have the fatal stench of general midi - but also tiny in comparison to the gigantic crashing brass and percussion. The contrast might have been what you wanted, but it is too much and creates a contradiction. If you had those same sections played by strings - maybe some cold sounding tremolos or senza vibratos accented by celeste - it would be great.

Excellent use of the brass! This is very visual sounding and a good mix as well.

  • Sid,

Very Nice work. did you use VSL percussion (top)? I think the WW section would benefit from VSL woodwinds - they are the stength of the library!

It is hard to really say whether it works or not without us seeing pictures, but think maybe a little cat and mouse play there would be good. Who knows though - it might just work with that scene (whatever it is.)

    Keep em- coming. [:D]

    Rob

  • Great! very powerful beginning and end. I don't think the WW sections are quite as bad as has been suggested, but it is true that it can't compete with the rest. Perhaps I'd score that for just muted strings and harp, or something like that [:)]

Anyway, I love the action writing, well done!!!

  • Thanks for your comments, suggestions and critics.

I find the "the woodwinds are first of all bad sounding in themselves - they have the fatal stench of general midi" quote a little dubious though because the WW are from XSample and Westgate, pretty good libraries. But maybe it's the way I use them that's a little strange for some listeners.

Though I understand the remark of the middle WW section being something totally diffirent from what's already happened. I must admit I'm still in the process of creating a good fluid flow inside my music which is of course critical. But thanks for drawing attention to that.

    Take care,
    -Sid.

  • Sid--

The VSL performance legato woodwinds are a quantum leap above any other woodwind samples. If you can scrape together the cash then I encourage you to purchase Opus 1 and Horizon French Oboe. You will be amazed at how much more realistic and expressive your woodwinds will become.

Your terrific compositional skills deserve the best samples to realize your ideas.

    Best,
    Jay

  • Great piece Sid!

I think you can get away with Westgate and XSample woodwinds IF you apply realistic expression curves for MOST notes (hell of a job to edit that after playing, if you don't have an expression controller).

    Cheerio,

    Peter
