Which computer are you using Piernick? PC or Mac?

  • I use a double pc, one for my sequencer cubasesx2 and the other for gigas.
both computers are pIV 2.20ghz and 1ghz of ram

  • Check out what you can do with convolution-based reverbs. An affordable, but nonetheless very good plugin (VST) is www.voxengo.com/pspace. You will need some good impulses (samples from real concert halls). You can find free ones at this site: www.noisevault.com.

    Success!

  • thanks Peter.
    Some opinions on IR-1 waves
Some tricks about any preset to use on a standard orchestra setup?

    Piernick [:P]

  • My biggest endorsement goes to Altiverb for real-sounding samples like the VSL. I'm not crazy about space designer; but Altiverb gives you such great options in terms of creating real spaces and mic placement. And i *think* it's for PC as well as Mac, but not quite sure...

  • Altiverb is Mac only and the company that makes it (www.audioease.com) has no plans for a PC version or for releasing their impulses for other plugins (which is a mistake IMO).
Soundwise, there is no difference between Pristine Space and the much more expensive IR1 from Waves. However, Waves has a good bundled impulse library and recently has started a new website for sharing impulses with IR1 owners: www.acoustics.net.
If you can afford it, I would go for IR1 on the PC. If that's too expensive, get Pristine Space and try the impulses from NoiseVault. There is also a free convolution reverb, SIR. I'm not sure about its current status or whereabouts.

I don't think you need special tricks right away with a good impulse for orchestral music. You will need to learn a few things about distance, early reflections, pre-delay etc. Just make sure to check this forum and other forums about this subject.

  • thanks a lot Peter. I'm cheking your links.
I saw also your website and heard your music. Very impressive.
I want to send you some mp3 of my compositions. Is't possible?
just to have some opinions. In italy there are many difficulties to have a "balanced" opinions for a young composer.

    Piernick

  • Hi Piernick,

    Thank you [:O]ops: [[;)]]

Well I don't mind if you send me some mp3's; it may take a few days before I respond though, I'm quite busy with work. Even now as we speak.

You can also post materials in the Orchestration section, where you will receive honest and positive criticisms.

    Regards,

    Peter
