  • Giga 3 / Sibelious / Vienna SL

Am just finding my way round G3 orchestra with Sib3.
I can't make any sense of most of the VSL supplied. Am I right in thinking
the strings in particular do not work properly without the Performance Tool?
If so how do I get it or is this just a way of getting us to buy more of VSL?
    Any help appreciated.

  • Hi Kanon,

I am sorry to read that you are having problems with our libraries.

What do you mean by "you can´t make any sense of the VSL supplied" or the strings not "working properly"? Please be a little more specific.

    Which edition(s) do you own?

Unfortunately, I have no experience whatsoever with Sibelius.

The Legato- and Repetition-mode of the Performance Tool is only required for articulations with "_Perf_" in their name. Those articulations are only contained in the Performance Set of the Complete Orchestral Package and in most of the Horizon products.

For the Orchestral Cube, the Alternation Tool handles instruments, where several articulations (like the "_all" programs or the instruments with "1+2" in their name), accessible through keyswitches, are mapped into one program. You can think of it like some kind of step sequencer. This utility comes in very handy when you want to play up and down bowing for instance.

As a registered customer, you are eligible to download the Alternation or the Performance Tool, depending on which editions you purchased, from the User Area of our website.

  • Herb,

Any word on when the tutorials are coming out?

Every month that passes without them is a month that my passion dies, if only a little.

  • Hi Marnix

Thank you for your reply - sorry for not being more specific.
The VSL I have is what is bundled with Gigastudio 3 orchestral.
The extensions are all .gig therefore I assume from what you have said
that the Performance Tool does not apply.

My problem at the moment is getting the strings to sound like strings - I think my problem is really with articulations and dynamics. It may be that I will just have to persever. In the past I have worked with eg Dan Dean solo strings and these have been simple to use although slightly limited in authenticity.

    Regards

    Kanon

  • kanon, it seems you refer to to the legato instruments using iMidi rules - i'd call them kind of *experimental* since as far as i see they have a very reduced range and have been provided by TASCAM.
all files supplied originally by VSL don't need the performance tool
    christian

ps: of course we'd like getting you to buy more VSL [;)]

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • I can't speak for Kanon but I'm equally disaappointed in the VSL 24-bit strings patches as supplied with GS3 Orchestral. It's not just the iMidi legato instruments - these of course are, as you say, experimental and limited to a one-octave range!

The problem I have is just that the strings don't sound that great - largely because the attack is so slow that anything other than a dirge makes them virtually inaudible. Fine if you're re-writing "Nimrod" or Albinoni Adagio, but no use for anything much faster.

I posted a question about this a week or so ago but got no replies!

What I'm trying to find out is whether I'm doing something wrong here or whether the full VSL Strings product would have a more useable general-purpose set of patches - i.e. one that doesn't sound as though the violin section are half-asleep.

Also very disappointed that there's no Violin II. But I guess that one's probably been covered as nauseam in other posts.

At the moment I'm sticking with my Sonic Implants Symphonic Strings (mini version). But I can't help feeling I must be missing something somewhere, since everyone's always raving about VSL.

  • Please don't forget that the Vienna Giga Symphony is a kind of freebie and includes less than 1% of the full VSL string stuff.

  • Strange. Hmm.

My post above was in anotehr topic I am sure of it. How did it get here?
