  • Want to buy but need some help

    Hello,

I'm new to this forum. I came here because my interest in the VSL-products was raised by the SOS review and the excellent demos here. I'm desperately seeking for realistic string sounds for my compositions, but I'm not really at home with software techniques etc.

This is what I have now (besides a controller keyboard and a soundmodule, of course):

Cubase SE and HaLionSE (both from Steinbergs 'studio pack'), hence come these questions:

    - I've read on the Cubase forum that more of the Horizon series will come available for Halion this fall. Is this true? Then: when and which products?
    - When the Halion versions (I'm waiting for Solo Strings, Glass and Stones, Overdrive and concert guitar) do arive, will I be able to use them with Halion SE?
    - What is the difference between the performance tool and the performance set. It seems to me that the latter is only available in the Pro Edition. Will the sound and performances in the Horizon series suffer because of that?
    - How does the Performance Tool work when you are playing? Does it involve a lot of programming (in a drumcomputer kind of way) or does it go along with me playing the keyboard?

A lot of questions, I know. I hope someone here can help me out. If not here, then where? (this seems to be an awesome and very complete website indeed)!

    Thanks in advance![/u]

  • I don't know about Halion SE problem.

You got to seperate Performance Set and Performance Tool. The Performance Set is a package including the performance samples and the Performance Tool (as a download). The tool has to be chained in the MIDI route between your sequencer and your sampler. It does not involve major programming skills for instant playing - only keyranges and tool mode (legato, alternation, horizon legato,...) and so on.

The Performance Set can be purchased for First Edition or Pro Edition, including orchestral performance samples (have a look at the articulation lists on the website for more detailed info about this). However, also Horizon Series Products come with performance samples (and the tool for download), there is no need to additionally purchase the Performance Sets to use them.

    Hope this helps so far,
    PolarBear

Actually I didn't remember quite right the first time. Herb said all Horizon products will be released in Kontakt format (check the link above).

  • Thank you! It's a relief that the Horizon series seems to be so well equipped. I have another question, though.

I have an p4 2.6, XP-system, with 1 gig ram. Will it be enough to run plug ins like Horizon? What PC's are you people using?

    Thanks again.

  • Just making sure you're not getting it wrong - there is no plugin for/with the VSL products. The Performance Tool is a tool running standalone but not as plugin.
