  • Orchestral instrument list - range poster

    Hi,
I'd like to hang big poster on my studio wall like this http://www.completechords.com/Images_Posters/Poster_Musical_Instruments/_MusInst_1.jpg

It'll be very usefull while composing music for orchestra. Do you have any idea where can I find really big and usefull poster like this. Or do you have any suggestions...

    Thanks in advance

Um . . . this may seem obvious, but try http://www.completechords.com/. Click on "Product Gallery" on the left sidebar.

  • Hi korayus,

I agree that this would be a great thing to have (we at VSL should really make one [H].

In case you don't find such a poster, I could help out with the following links to Instruments Online on our website:

    Woodwinds:
    http://www.vsl.co.at/english/INSTRUMENTS/Woodwinds/General/RANGE.htm

    Brass:
    http://www.vsl.co.at/Data/IK_Notengrafiken/Scores/Brassinst_Range_Linien_01_n.gif

    Strings:
    http://vsl.cms.deatech.at/notengrafiken/Strings_Range.gif

    best,
    sabine

  • The problem is the picture (which I gave the link above), isnt that big and not a good quality picture. It'll be nice if VSL can make such a nice thing.
Hope to see from you... [8-)]
    All the best

Yes, you should! That would be really cool. The pic that this one links to seems a bit elementary-school in style. It would be nice to have a really classy, stylish, professional-looking poster that would serve the same purpose. And so far, as a graphic designer, I have been very impressed with VSL's packaging and web design. You guys just know how to put people in that critical music mood.
In case you all want to farm out the poster design job, my primary work function is design, with music comp as a side. And I might take a crack at it anyway if there's a demand.
Speaking of which, in addition to all the info on the linked poster, is there anything else musicians would want up on the wall next to instrument ranges as a handy reference?

  • It is big and good quality. It's 27" high no less!

How hilarious is it that this person was asking or a poster of that picture and right on the home page you can buy that picture as a poster? I mean that is ... funny.

Believe me 27" is too small if you want to see everything while you are standing up in front of computer. it should be at least 47" x 78" in my case. Anyway...

  • If you do such a poster, the way Rimsky-Korsakov shows ranges is a very good idea imo: for most instruments, there is not a fixed 'top note' just a range of increasingly problematic and rare notes. See "principles of orchestration" -- and it's in public domain. (might need to be updated for a few instruments, but still pretty accurate if conservative)
