  • If I'm not mistaken, Thomas mentioned that those strings are custom samples.

  • Clockmaker demo?? Where can I find this tune?

It's in the Horizon demo section.

  • Thanks, lovely tune. It reminds me of Hook.

  • Congrats, Thomas!
Sounds very realistic... Again you managed to create a fantastic tune embeded in an amazing score atmosphere!

Would you please let us know what files (strings etc) you used - was it really "just" horizon products?

  • This is a wonderful work (as are all of the pieces I've heard so far by Thomas). The strings are absolutely astonishing!!! I too would love to know how he accompished this extraodinary sound. Please tell us. Pretty please with sugar on top!

  • Great tune! Somehow it reminds me on the musical style of Debussy ...
Really fantastic! Especially the orchestration ...

  • Thanks a lot everybody!!

Herb asked me to do another demo that featured the oboe a little more extensively so I whipped up this. Unfortunately the surrounding arrangement can be a bit misleading as it consists mostly of custom samples - which was what I had ready at the time of the request.

The focus was on the french oboe (which is really terrific) and there's some epic horn parts going on in it as well, however the strings are 100% custom, as well as the brass.

Anyway, very happy to see that people appreciated the piece! [[:)]]

Keep on composing & have a nice summer vacation, if any [[:)]]

  • Hi Thomas,

    Great demo. Love the strings.

Forgive me for asking, but is "custom library" a euphamism or code-word for "from another library" ?

Both you and Sharmy seem to be suddenly using samples from a custom library. Have you "switched teams", or have you really gone out and produced your own string samples ?

Hope you don't think the question are too impudent. [:P]

    Thanks

  • Those are not strings from a competing library. They are too good to be from a commercial library. [:)] [*-)]

  • I guess i will chime in here. They are not from a competing library. Whether they are too good can be debated. I would feel a huge loss not having VSL strings in my palette. Nothing can replace VSL.

  • Some companies (like MediaVentures) or groups of people can be in a position to create a "custom" library, which they cannot or do not want to sell commercially. There can be several reasons for that (non-disclosure agreement with the orchestra, or simply no interest in the marketing and sales work required). If you read interviews with welknown composers, there are quite a few of them who have such "custom" libraries.

It may be something to be jealous about, but as Craig says, nothing beats VSL, so don't get overexcited.

It's just that this darn Norwegian guy can do magic with ANY library [;)]

    Peace and fun,

  • Is Thomas J from Norway?

  • I can't find this demo. Where does one look?

    Thanks! darcy

  • It would be nice it the there was a disclaimer stating that the strings are custom samples. Without a disclaimer it seems a little misleading.

  • You make a good point, and I know VSL being of high moral standards has trouble with this. As a demo composer I try to feature the VSL instrument I am trying to present, in a good light. Sometimes I choose to use a few custom samples in a mockup to help. The featured VSL instrument though is never compromised.

Front page, go to "listen to all Horizon Demos", then scroll down a bit.

    ok [[[:)]]]

I suppose the TJB_-_Evolutionary_Progress music uses custom samples also ? except the oboe :p
