  • Opus 1 and G4 iMac?

    Hallo
I want to knew if I can use Logic Platinum/EX24ll
and OPUS 1( and a seperated fireware harddisc) on my
iMac 800 HZ with 700 RAM? Will this work or do I also have to buy a knew computer for running OPUS 1?

Thanks for help! The demo I heard of OPUS 1 was superb.

  • welcome alfred,
MHz (as always) should not be an issue, but i'd recommend to look after some memory upgrade. given you need say 250 MB for logic/exs you will have 400 MB left for streaming buffers of samples (let a little portion free ram on the machine) this results in roughly 3,000 loadable samples. now divide this number by the number of samples found for each articulation you want to load and the result will be the number of loadable articulations.
you should get memory for an affordable price even for imacs - this would increase your possibilities a lot

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.

    Tanks a lot Christian !
I am not shure I understatod all of your information. I have to little
expirence working with samplers. I have just used Roland and Emu-boxes outside my computer.Thinking in a practical way when making music for documentaris and shorfilms, is it possible to work with a little
orchestra ,let"say a string Quartet, and some windinstruments like
an oboe, a flute and a basson on my iMac wich for maximum can have
    1 gig in RAM ??

with best regards and hope for the future

  • alfred, softsamplers can work in two modes - streaming and from memory(RAM). the advantage of streaming is, the sampler doesn't load the whole wave data but only a relatively small portion of it into the streaming buffer (which is depending on sampler and settings lets say 128 KB per sample). as soon the sample is used by a track, the next bytes from the wave files are loaded from disk to the buffer - this avoids the necessity to load everything in ram and allows loading more samples, considering a sustain note has lets say 800 KB. if you don't use streaming (like in hardware samplers) you'd have to load the complete sample into RAM and therefore get less samples loaded.
nevertheless you populate your physical ram with wave data until it's almost full. now every instrument (or articulation) consists of a certain number of samples (a legato instrument up to 1,000, maybe more, a small percussion instrument only few), so it depends on the *size* of the instrument how much you can get in a certain configuration and there is no generic rule that can be applied (like 400 MB = 40 instruments), this depends on your performance/song and the instruments you like to use for.
so regarding memory in a nutshell: much helps much

    Christian,
    thanks agin for your help.
I will try to use your information and find out what I
can do with my iMac, and OPUS 1.
For the moment I can´t aford a G5 which ofcourse
should have been much better for the VSL.

Do sombody knew if OPUS 1 can work togheter
with Sibelius 3? Is the only possiblity to buy a PC
and a Gigasampler in that case ?

In my opinon its more intutive to learn the sympohnic
art, and craft of composing, with a program like Sibelius 3, than with Logic.

I think many of you won´t agree with me? Logic seems
to be the standard for a lot of the profs. today.
