This thread is part of my "WATCH THE COMPOSER" series! [[:)]] lol

I decided to start a new thread so as not to clog up the Herrmann thread (for those who hadn't read the Herrmann thread I was posting my latest score in there on the basis that it was something that Herrmann fans might appreciate).

Here is the latest 1M1 titles cue. I have done some minor tweaking to the first 22 bars, but I have added 15 more bars for a total of 37 at this point. However, the form is not set in stone. I may move sections around, cut this and that, etc. And also bars 23-37 are rough sketch ideas, they are not mixed, and not carefully quantized yet.

    Evan,

I thought I would bring this over to the new thread, so I wouldn't have to keep flicking backwards and forwards. Yes, sounds great, although no calliope at this point. [:)] Keep it going like this and no problems at all, I wouldn't think.

So, you've got a new G5 on the way then! Thats nice. Didn't wanna wait to see if there are any upgraded versions announced in the next few months? Or will any extra Ghz not make any difference?

I plan on getting a G5 laptop around November. And for now the extra GHz is gonna give me more reward for the risk. I like to upgrade my computer a few months before the new line comes out. It's usually about a $400 upgrade. In this case I am making a big jump so it's about a $600 upgrade. But going from the Dual 2G G5 to a new Dual 4G G5 should be about $200-400 this summer. If I do that on every project the price jumps stay at bay, and just about any project can comfortably clear between $200 and $500 for musicians ...er, G5 chips I mean. [[;)]]

P.S. You might consider going back to your post above and editing it so that you can put QUOTE tags around my quoted text. You can just remove it. I get you are responding to what I said. [:)]

    Hey Guys,

I finished, if at least in sketch, the entire first half of the Main Titles. It sounds great. And it's gonna be even better by June when I get back to it after scoring the rest of the film. i get locked picture in about 5 days. Wish me luck.

"Fear Of Clowns" 1M1 Prelude (Bars 1 -37)

  • Ok. Done!

  • Evan, I like the percussive VROOMS that happen at exactly 0:25 and 0:37. What is that? I can make out that its a diminished chord with piccolo ripping up to land on the b5th, and there are cymbals and low percussion (timp or bass drum)... But I'd like to see the exact orchestration for those things, because its a great effect.

Ah thanks. Yes it was this effect that I kind of picked up from Alex North's music. It's a kind of munching of sounds. It creates a unpitched "flurry" is the best word i can describe. I worked a little at it and figured out how to do it a few years back.

Here's one of them as it is in my score (the second one):

    Piccolo - B6 grace, D#7 8th, F7 8th stacc
Piatti One - Muted Smash 8th
    Piatti Two - Muted Smath 2nd 8th
    Timpani - Ruff to D# 8th, D 8th
    Violins div1 - gliss up to A#6 8th, A6 8th stacc
    Violins div2 - F#6 8th, F6 8th stacc
    Violins div3 (Violas in real world) - D#6 8th, D6 8th stacc

That's it. The Piatti and Piccolo shriek are intended to blur and confuse the ear. Everybody's doing a part of "Ebm" to "Dm" in 8ths. Never underestimate the power of real players. A lot of people who were used to synth love LOTS of notes. Here as far as pitched instruments go I have Violins, Violas, and a single Piccolo. And it would sound like this with real orchestra.

And by the way, I will have AT LEAST this main title notated as a concert piece. But dont hold your breath. it might not be for 3 months.

P.S. I am not sure if i mentioned it but I expanded my Contra Bass Trombone to be four(4) C.B Trombones. As I finish up this Main Titles I will better know the full instrumentation that is necessary to cover all teh ground that will be "FEAR OF CLOWNS".

  • Great, thanks. I'll have to give that a go with the libraries I do have (don't have VSL). Good luck with the feature.

Very nice. Sounds very good Evan. Thanks for posting this. The opening bars are reminiscent of Jason and the Argonauts. That's OK by me and not meant to be other than a compliment on your work. I assume you have the Pro Ed of VSl and the Perf Tool?

    Paul

  • Pro Edition and some Horizon Series and Performance Tool. yes. EXS. Logic Pro. Dual G4 1.42Ghz to be Dual 2Ghz G5 on Friday.

Also, unbeknownst to you guys, I have a Calliope part for that "Argonauts" section. Turns it into this evil clown music. It's great. Will put it in there when I have my Calliope sample. Sending an engineer over to this collectors house in Delaware.
