  • Looking for mentor in composition

    Hi there,

I'm looking for someone that could help me in the composition process.

I'm pretty good in programming and orchestrating but I have difficulties in extending my ideas on my pieces. What I mean is that I have tons of melodic, rythmic ideas but I don't always know how to go from one to the other in the same piece.

I know some of you are really talented and confirmed composers.
I also know that you probably don't have much time to teach someone like me.
However maybe you could redirect me to some readings and also to give me some directions I should take in order to improve my composition skills.

    Thanks for your time!
    Vincent

  • If you look for personal mentors it would be interesting for the chaps around here where you live.

  • I also need a mentor but I need to learn what it is to learn about instruments in an orcehstra... how you write it down on sheets. Every instrument has different ranges and so, but there is so much I don't know about scoring an orchestra...I know how I write legato and cresendo/decresendo but I believe there is so much more....

What is that person called? who knows about these things.... A piano tutor doesn't usually know this. Arranger? orchestrator?

  • I am available for online (iChat AV) or in person instruction. My teaching credentials include being the primary USA tutor for the Hollywood division of Music For The Media, an online course in Film Scoring. Students are on record as being greatly appreciative of my detailed analysis of their pieces and how I helped them with their strengths and weaknesses.

I work to foster your strengths and weed out your weaknesses. I do not teach how to be like ME. You would learn how to be more like YOU, and my main focus is on composition, orchestration and the technical craft of scoring music to film.

Please email me if you are interested. We would first setup a half off 1 to 3 hour initiation meeting where I assess your potential to see if it would be a beneficial partnership. I will be very honest as to whether or not I am the right person to help you.

I am a working film composer, so the process would need to be a flexible one as well. My credits include orchestrations and transcription work on:

    Starship Troopers
    The Phantom
    NFL
    White Squall

and my composition work extends into the classical world with commissions by the United Nations. My film scoring history can be reviewed online at:
    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003563/

And you may visit my personal website, which has not been updated for about 5 months at:
    http://www.evanevans.org

I look forward to hearing from anyone eager to pursue knowledge!

    I am very truly yours,
    Evan Evans

I also run a library music business that is one of the top 10 on the internet. The site was recently attacked by a hacker and we are in the process of rebuilding it. Please direct your music tracks to: http://www.cuepop.com
when it is completely restored in about one month.

  • How does iChat AV work?
For now I want to bring up the old topic...Bb trumpets

Could we talk about it here?
