  • Small String sections

    Hi Herb & Co!

First of all: congrats to your amazing and awesone work! Thanks a lot for your outrageous support!

My question: WHEN WILL THE SMALL STRING SECTIONS be available. I could hear them in the OVERDRIVE demo..., isn't it? [[;)]]

    Best regards

    Matt

  • HY Matt!

Which Overdrivedemo do you mean? There are no small string sections out now. In "Herbs Hellfire" you hear the solo violin and strings from the performance set.

  • Interesting! Thanks for the reply...

  • Hi Matt! Hi Air!

In "Herbs Hellfire" we used the "String ensemble" for the staccati and the sustained notes. You find those programs in Opus 1 of course. The solo violin on top of that is from the Performance Set of the Pro Edition (I simply HAD to use it, that´s the luxury of the Pro Edition...)

BTW: We are recording small string ensembles right now.

  • I'm excited to hear you are recording the small string sections - that is a great addition because of something I've noticed on other (not VSL) libraries - the larger sections tend to sound more "homogenized" and less expressive. When you can actually hear the individual players' vibrato, etc., it makes a great difference.

Plus the other thing I am looking forward to is the sampling of more "lyrical" type portamento or p legato sounds that would be suitable in a very "teneramente" type soft violin line. It is not precisely possible with the previous VSL p legato sounds though they are great and work perfectly for other more "normale" mp kinds of legato. (Amazing that one can actually be discussing different types of legato in a sample library!) The addition of this legato will create a sampled sound that has never even been attempted either directly or by "faking" it. Probably the closest thing is the Sonic Implants smaller string sections which of course do not implement actual legato the way the VSL does.

  • Yes, I agree, it would be great if VSL takes this opportunity to address some of the concerns people have with the string sustains to date.

I believe what is needed in addition to the available sustains are extremely lyrical espressivo cantabile samples that "evolve" expressively in time. These samples should in effect sing, full of the nuances of emotion so that one enjoys just listening to them individually, like mini recordings of sonic expression..

With several versions of espressivo samples, VSL would be the first library that allows prominent string lines to be molded into convincing and passionate experiences. Passages from the literature can be used as references for the type pf performanaces required from the players.

In my opinion this is a very important element in virtual orchestration that has not yet been successfully addressed.

    Cheers,
