  • Debussy Mockup

    Hi,

    I've recently posted this demo on the Northern Sounds site, but thought you might like to hear it. It's the 2nd movement of Debussy's La Mer - Jeux de vagues. It isn't exclusively VSL as I only own the Pro Ed Perf Set, but, as you can hear, VSL is at the very heart of it. For me the mockup is unimaginable and probably impossible to pull off without VSL (thanks Herb!). Everything is 100% midi.

    p.s. I replaced two of the Cor Anglais solos firstly with a French Horn and then a Bassoon. The Perf Set Cor Anglais has no vibrato and just didn't sound right. There's also a violin solo that's 8ve up as it just sounded more convincing.

    I've listened to this quite a few times Andy. Its more than convincing. Would you mind posting which system you are using on this. I'm assuming its a Mac system with Altiverb?

  • Hi Paul,

    All of the VSL instruments are running on a P4 2.4gHz, using Giga Studio and Kontakt. My sequencer (DP) is running on a G4 and, you guessed it, running 2 instances of Altiverb.

    it sounds fantastic, I had to remind myself several times that I´m listening to a virtual orchestra. I followed the music like I would while listening to a real one. Congratulations!
    I´m very curious what other libraries you used for which purposes, are you willing to share?

    This is the best midi performance I've ever heard. One of my favorite pieces, too. To capture the transparency and complexity of Debussy's orchestration and all the lines so well is very difficult. You did a fine job of "virtual conducting" this orchestra.

    Information about other libraries used is in a thread of the same name in the Northern Sounds site in 'Sample Libraries Discussions', but to be honest I don't think I would have begun to attempt it without the VSL Perf Set - I think I'd have got stuck just 5 bars in with the flutes' descending phrase into the clarinets.

    You should go into some book on the history of MIDI orchestration/realization as a trailblazing standard setter.

    Of course we're all waiting with bated breath for a breakdown of instruments (samples) used and technical means applied.

    And thanks for reminding us what a great composer Debussy is. We've actually been talking a bit about his immense talent in the Composer Orchestration Instruments area here. Please stop in and share any thoughts you may have on this art.

    No doubt the composer himself would appreciate the care, effort, and results of your work. Terrific stuff.

    I noticed you are running both Gigastudio and Kontact on a single PC? Is it possible to run multiple instances of Kontact? I have a similar setup (2 GS's and G4 running DP.) I didn't think it was possible to run anything other than GS on a PC. But if I can run Kontact as well that would be very cool.

  • Yes it is possivle to run both Giga and Kontakt on a single machine and if you have something like V-Stack you can get ore than 1 instance of Kontakt.

    p.s. I use a RME Hammerfall card, so you ought to check it will work with your sound card.

  • I want more people to hear this - it is a masterpiece of MIDI!

    It proves that performances done on computer can be as near ideal as possible for an orchestral performance standpoint - as I have argued to great skepticism - even on this forum. This is extremely significant artistically to me. I am very excited by this excellent work. Also, conincidentally by Mathis' extreme detail of oboe midi performance. These really inspire me to more perfect work with MIDI. More people must hear these!

    Pretty amazing indeed. I think you've broken the sound barrier for the first time with this Andy. I understand that you are going to post some original work. Look forward to hearing that.

    I don't have the Perf Tool at this time. Is this the main thing that made this possible re: reality? (excuse the paradox).

    You say it took 10 days. How many hours a day approximately?
