  • Excited about rumours of Halion version of VSL

This rumour is most excellent news... and I have it on good authority that it is more than just a rumour.
What wonderful people you are at VSL.
Just as I'm about to start the conversion of 240gig of full blown VSL into Halion myself... I'm too early [:(]
Still: I look forward to one day not having to do this conversion.
That is of course, unless this is just a rumour!? [;)]

  • Is there an AU Halion?

  • paynterr, please understand we cannot monitor all sources - although i do my best to do so [;)] - point me to the source of this roumor and i'll step in with correct informations

  • By chance I stumbled across this thread in the Steinberg Halion forum yesterday:

  • I used all the breaks I had during my main jobs to convert the Pro Edition to the kontakt format. It took me 3 days. But after I loaded some of the patches and played with them, it's all worth it.

By the way, the kontakt version of the Pro Edition "shrink" to 190+G in file size. Have I missed anything, or is this correct?

mathis, thanks for remembering me to look more frequently at the halion forum - please see also my post in this thread

arys, it seems something is missing - you should end up with about 230 GB sample data

  • .....this is still problematic. I started out with Halion because EXS doesn't yet have good release sample implementation. I like halion, but Halion is not an Audio Unit, it's a VST. The VST-AU adapter from fxpansion - a wonderful tool- enables you to open Halion within Logic under OSX, but!!: you can't just save a Halion bank (.fxb) from within Logic OSX. This is a major drawback as you then have to re-edit all your master settings every time to start work. i haven't yet found a way to deal with this problem - maybe somebody does?

There are threads running on the Halion and Sonik Matter forums for those who want to investigate further. The links are below. Just one thing: please, only post on these threads if you have a practical suggestion or comment, because so far the posters seem to have quite useful comments and it would be nice if it stays that way [[;)]] !

    Thanks

  • Arys,

did you import into Kontakt on a Mac.... or pc????

I was about to do the same import into kontakt/mac.
Any pointers would be immensley welcome!

    Thanks.

  • How does the MAC VST OSX Halion fare CPU perforamnce-wise with the EXS24mkII or the MACH5 ?

    Thanks,
    Evan Evans

  • Evan,

I have a freind who went with halion and it fared poorly compared to EXS.
much more limited on the amount of voices it could get going streaming by comparison. overhead with filters enabled was also pretty poor by comparison.
I forget the exact total but I think it was almost half of what exs got. Comparible to what Kontakt was getting with their mess of a dfd extension before the last update. (which is better in os9 but still a mess in osx).

Thus my comments in my other thread. I would be extremely leary of buying a major library that uses heavy streaming in halion format.

Maybe next year Halion/kontakt/M5 will be better streaming contenders against EXS. Not so far this year to my experience.
Just wish I liked logic more!

  • Nick, just to answer your question:

no, Halion is not AU-ready. Probably will be sometime but don't hold your breath. If you want to know more check this post:

  • All I can say is that I am using Halion in the PC world and the streaming has been excellent. I have managed to get an entire orchestral template up and running using GOS, dan dean etc. and this was streaming on a single 1gig machine, from a single USB 7200rpm harddrive!!!! I didn't plan on sticking to just the single USB harddrive, but it seemed that that was all that was required.
My experience tells me that RAM is always the first thing to become a bottleneck.
I have since built two new 3gig p4 3gig memory machines as I plan to use VSL fx-teleported to these two new machines.
The only downside in the whole issue is the fact that I have to convert .gig to Halion AND that Halion has far better features natively than .gig, so I have to contend with not having all the key-switching and modwheel controllers in place.
However, I am confident this will come.
    Hope this helps?

  • Please note that my comments about halion/kontakt performance is about the mac versions.

It seems both apps fare FAR better on the PC side.

Us mac guys aren't having much fun lately.

Dual G5's but stuck with bad streaming from vsti's

  • Thanks Nigel.

A couple of reasons things are faring better on the PC side.

First, all the major programs can handle VSTi's and the ASIO 2 drivers. As result, VSTi and ASIO 2 are now a kind of "standard" for the PC area. Consequently, we have excellent results with FXTeleport and MIDIoverLAN allowing for a fairly complete networking solution with just MIDI, and with MIDI and audio using FXTeleport (Giga wrapper from FX should be available pretty soon).

On the Mac platform, we now have "browser" wars in the sense of Apple vs. Steinberg on redefining AU vs. VST Plug-ins. With this, we have three different OS systems, all of which are different - OS 9.2, OS X Jaguar and OS X Panther.

And then I believe we're also seeing a more sublte shoot-out between Apple and MOTU.

All these "business issues" create COMPATIBILITY problems on the Mac that are both agonizing and time consuming to deal with.

Right now, everything works quite well on the PC. But give it time. Soon we'll have Giga 3.0 and all kinds of compatibility issues sorting out Giga, GSIF 2.0, Giga-Rewire-Sonar, Giga-Rewire-Cubase, then Giga-Rewire-Seq + various streaming VSTi plug-ins...AND THEN mid year -

We get the new P4 and dual Xeon CPUs optimized for 64 Leghorn, and overall replacing the Intel Itanium chipset. And then at year end early 2005, we'll have Longhorn released and a whole new set of issues and threads for the various forums!
